11 Tips and Tricks We Wish We Knew Before Starting Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is here, and there’s some points you’ll likely be scratching your head and in need of some help. That’s okay though, because we’ve been playing it a while and have quite a few tips and tricks to make your time with it easier, more enjoyable, and with far less frustration than is needed.

Explore Every Nook and Crevice

In Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the map is relatively linear, but you’ll still be rewarded for looking outside the normal path. There’s numerous little spots, alternate paths, and areas above you that’ll be hiding something useful. Whether it’s another Resonance Point, an artifact or a new sword, you’ll want to explore and give yourself every opportunity to make yourself better. Plus sometimes, some of the best vistas and scenery are only seen from a hidden spot. Explore!

Approach From a Different Angle

Puzzles are one of the main pillars of gameplay in the game, and with puzzles comes the need to solve them to move on. These aren’t small Sudoku puzzles either, but regularly involve massive stones, environments you’ll need to drench in light, or large shields to protect yourself.

The answer to the puzzles isn’t always obvious, so you should get in the habit of moving throughout the area, looking for the answer from a different angle. Sometimes you’ll need to aim your light towards something from a certain angle, or be standing in a specific spot. You can have the right answer but not be in the right position, so before you give up and try something else, just move.

Ask for Help

You’ll quickly realise that sometimes you won’t always have the skills to get the answer. Whether youre not understanding your journal properly, or just can’t see the solution, you may need some help. Don’t ignore the game’s help system. Pressing up on your D-Pad will give you a hint, sometimes from Leni, other times from yourself, but always a little helpful. However, the tip is pretty generic, so if you’re hoping for an exact or in-depth answer to your problem, you’re going to be out of luck.

Upgrade Your Skills

This may sound obvious, but Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy doesn’t do a great job of making you aware that you are ready to upgrade or buy a skill as you’re playing. During your journey you’ll find Resonance Points, and earn them as you fight hordes of enemies. Make sure you’re using these points to upgrade Sophia regularly!

There are six skills you can buy, and then the choice of two Mastery Skills that add to the skill itself. From blocking red unparryable attacks to throwing forward-stepping enemies, you’ll want to take some time and consider your approach as to how to upgrade your Sophia.

Try Out Different Blades

Melee combat is a big focus on the game, and there’s not just one weapon you can use, but in fact, there’s eight! You do have to search and explore the environment to find these blades, but when you do, make sure you use them and try out different options. Each weapon may attack in the same way, and they’re all swords, but they all have different effects that can turn the battle in your favour.

Stand and Stare at Your Surroundings

Message tip to make you better at the game, and more a tip to improve your enjoyment of it. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a wonderfully beautiful game, with all sorts of environments shown off. From the gorgeous Mediterranean flowers and plants, to the ancient ruins and disgustingly dangerous Macula, you need to stop and stare for a little while. It’s too pretty, and really should be appreciated. The environments themselves are a character, especially later on, and you shouldn’t be rushing through them.

Take Your Time

This can mean many things in the game, from puzzle solving to combat, but the main reason for including it is in the latter stages of the game where you’ll be having to avoid certain enemies (no spoilers). That same beautiful blue light that follows you as you run around in the early levels is now the very thing that’ll get you killed, so take your time. Crouch, move slowly, plan your route, and only sprint if you absolutely have to!

Use the Light

Light being a safehaven is nothing new to the franchise, with the previous two titles featuring the mechanic heavily. This time, the light can also be a weapon, as well a way to solve puzzles. Using Sophia’s Light vessel, you’ll be able to use its various modes to uncover hidden symbols, unlock doors, kill enemies, and much more. Just make sure you’re actually in proximity of light that you can redirect, be it from the sun or a lit brazier, for example. If in doubt, look to the light for help.

Use Your Environment

In combat, no matter the weapons you’ve chosen, you’re going to want to use the environment to help. If you have the skill, you’ll be able to redirect and throw enemies, making them stumble uncontrollably. If this happens to be towards another enemy, or even better, a wall or cliff, then that’s only a win for you.

You will find yourself fighting multiple enemies throughout the game, so anything that can give you an edge is to be exploited. Don’t hesitate to kick an enemy off a cliff for an easy kill. Plus it’s always satisfying.

Don’t Sleep on the Throwables

Another obvious one, but an important one. You should be using all the tools at your disposal when in combat, and one of the main ones is the ability to throw something that the enemy has dropped. Sometimes a knife, other times a vase, but it can be the difference between winning and losing a combat encounter. If you see a throwable, use it, especially when the bigger, shielded enemies are around, as it can cause them to stagger and then you can follow up.

Even better, if you have the skill that allows it, you’ll be able to stow a throwable on your belt. If you make sure to grab one at the end of a fight, you’ll have one ready for the next one.

The Grappling Hook is More Than a Climbing Tool

I found myself regularly forgetting about my Grappling Hook during my playthrough, and it was such a mistake. If you’ve got numerous enemies in front of you, you might not want to engage in case they all attack at once.

Just like Batman in the Arkham series, just use your Grappling Hook to pull one towards you and isolate them, breaking the group up and giving you a quick and easy ‘in’ towards defeating them.
