Call of Duty: World War 2 Lasted Days on Xbox Game Pass Thanks to Hackers

Whether it’s the latest game or something in Call of Duty‘s past, it seems like hackers will ruin anything they can. Just recently, the 2017 title in the popular FPS franchise was added to the Xbox Game Pass, and then it was taken down because hackers had taken it over. The game’s official account posted an update about it but didn’t say what exactly the issue was here. However, if you’ll follow the thread, people have posted clips in the comments addressing those issues.

Following this, Activision has taken the game’s PC version down as of this writing and we don’t know when it’s coming back. According to Statista, the game has sold 19.2 million copies. However, SteamDB shows there aren’t many players right now and had 19,406 players at its peak, which was almost eight years ago.

It is not confirmed but discussions over the internet suggest that it’s something called remote code execution (RCE). In an article by Malwarebytes that covered the issue in the Call of Duty game, they explained it as a malicious code that attackers use to gain remote access to their victims’ systems.

Just how dangerous can this thing be? This seven-year-old Steam discussion about the original Modern Warfare 3 clears it out. A user called JavaScript wrote,

Guys it has been found an exploit on games that run this game engine(quake3) that allows remote code execution WTFFFFFFF. basically the exploiter/hacker can run any code on the HOST MACHINE, meaning that he can either hack lobbies or hack the host pc (installing rats, backdoors, malware and viruses in general, basically do anything). THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE

It also redirected it to this Reddit post, which first addressed that issue.

As of this writing, the issue still persists in Call of Duty: World War 2.
