Helldivers 2 is the latest game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment that is getting ported to a rival platform. While this didn’t sit well with most of the gaming community, the decision to port a high-profile game like this could be signalling the end of a longtime battle and the start of a new era. This controversial move makes sense from a business perspective, but others can’t help but worry about what this could mean for the future.
Nevertheless, it is exciting to see a game be celebrated across console platforms, but what kicked the hornet’s nest is something unexpected.
Helldivers 2 Is the Olive Branch That Could Bring Everyone Together
The gaming community immediately fell in love with what Helldivers 2 had to offer. An online multiplayer experience with an entertaining gameplay loop that can be shared across PC and the PlayStation 5 community. Despite the issues and shortcomings from the publisher’s side months ago, the game remained strong, and Arrowhead Game Studios kept its head up high to make it better.
Some fans have anticipated the Helldivers sequel making its way to the Xbox side due to popular demand, and this could suggest that the days of console exclusivity are nearly over. Years of bickering and insults from both sides could end if Sony Interactive Entertainment follows Microsoft’s path to port most of its high-profile first-party exclusives to rival platforms.

Most PlayStation games have already been ported to PC; however, Sony doesn’t view this platform space as a direct competitor, but as a companion or ally to grow the brand. Porting a game like Helldivers 2 to Microsoft consoles makes the most sense, considering the game is mostly multiplayer-focused.
When the game was first released, it didn’t stop the modding community from adding character models as playable skins from other franchises like Master Chief from Halo. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to port this game could usher the video game industry into a new era where the console exclusivity structure is obsolete.
The Latest Teaser Could Also Suggest a High-Profile Xbox IP Is Shipping to the Rival Platform
At the end of the teaser, some fans immediately clocked a potential teaser with Halo 3 ODST. The Halo games are probably the only thing that Microsoft has to rival the success of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s pantheon of first-party titles. Rumors have circulated that the Microsoft title will be ported to PlayStation 5 sometime soon, and chances are high amidst the Helldivers 2 port.
Fans were vocal about the idea of having crossovers with other franchises, but this one makes a lot of sense on paper. Both games share plenty of similarities from a gameplay perspective and world design. It would be historic to see two popular franchises from rival platforms come together for an epic crossover and ports shortly after.
Helldivers 2 is available on PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on August 26, 2025.
