During a ridiculously busy week at Gamescom 2025, I managed to grab a behind-closed-doors discussion with Chief Creative Officer of Saber Interactive Tim Willits. From talking about his well-wishes for John Romero after his studio fell before the Microsoft axe, or how he already has a preferred playstyle for the yet-to-be-released John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, he wasn’t shy about dishing some details, including some speculative information about a ‘really cool announcement’ for World War Z coming soon.
Both a successful publisher and developer in their own right, Saber Interactive released World War Z back in 2019, and since then, have been supporting the game consistently, with new updates, content, DLC, hotfixes, and much more. Having recently told IGN over the rumoured revival of the World War Z film franchise, which he attributed to the game being so popular, it seems the demand for the IP is at an all-time high.
During our discussion, I asked what the support for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 would look like once the confirmed third installment releases in a few years:
“It all depends. Yeah, I mean, we have to figure it out. Yeah, like World War Z right now makes so much sense. And like the team that we have on it, is just rock and rolling. They figure it out. They know what the players want. There’s a huge audience still. And we actually have a really cool announcement for World War Z coming up in a couple of months.”
At this point, I jumped in quickly and asked, “World War Z 2?”, and Willits hesitated, smirking ever so slightly, and returned my question with an equally vague and media-trained response:
“Well, no. I don’t know, but it’s not World War Z 2 right now.“
Despite my attempts, Willits wasn’t willing to expand any more on that little nugget of information, preferring to leave me (and you) wondering what might be coming in the next few months for World War Z. The question, though, is what could it be that they’re announcing? A new edition? More DLC? Neither seems so massive to warrant the tease Willits gave. It was certainly linked to the game, not the film, so it has nothing to do with the potential sequel he told IGN about. What do you think it could be?

Honestly, all we really want is new campaigns. We would literally give them real life money for more campaigns. All this stuff about cosmetics and frames recently has been a big disappointment.
