Marvel’s Wolverine Will Be a Gory Bloodbath, but Insomniac Games Has To Find a Way to Work Around One Key Mechanic

Marvel’s Wolverine has an official release window around Fall of 2026, and the gameplay trailer did not hold back. The developers gave fans what they wanted, and it is safe to assume that this project is in good hands. The combat is visceral, and it is the closest way a fan can get to live the life of the fan favorite X-Man and Avenger.

This is a superhero game through and through, and like most titles, the playable characters are not indestructible. The character is renowned for their incredible healing factor, but it may cause problems from a developer’s standpoint.

It is no secret that wherever the Wolverine goes, blood and death are not too far behind. Most fans recognize this character’s main mutation is the retractable Adamantium claws, but second to that is his impressive healing factor, equalled by very few in any medium. This means he could regenerate almost instantly from any wound he sustained from a fight, as seen since day one in the comics, and more recently on the big screen in the live-action films. Actually killing Logan is nigh on impossible, as proven in comic history, especially via ‘normal’ means.

Being such an iconic part of the character, this will undoubtedly feature in the game, and in fact was included in a blink-and-you’ll miss it moment in the trailer, with Logan’s Adamantium skull being visible in a deep wound, before rapidly healing over as if it was never there. It’s interesting, if not a little confounding, to see how the developers will address this in gameplay, as it goes against what’s considered a normal gameplay loop. After all, if you take damage, you die. Wolverine takes damage; he heals.

Insomniac Games is no stranger to superhero games and has experience in making original superhero adventures with established pop culture characters – look no further than Spider-Man. In the Spider-Man games, players can heal either Spider-Man through focus healing, which can be farmed by beating enemies or performing tricks while swinging. This was a clever method to let Spider-Man, an enhanced individual, heal mid-combat and tie it into gameplay. In Marvel’s Wolverine, this shouldn’t be an issue since Logan’s healing factor is much faster.

Insomniac Games Can’t Make the Wolverine Invincible and Immortal

Fans should expect a bloodfest, but they can’t just go slicing and dicing every Reaver they see in the game. There will be some way for Insomniac Games to make sure that Wolverine isn’t the powerhouse he is, in the same way that the comics, films, and video games before this one did. Perhaps something will happen in the story where Logan loses his healing abilities or it will be reduced greatly, similar to The Wolverine and Logan.

Alternatively, they could go the same route with Uncharted, where Nathan and Chloe have a luck factor where they will be peppered with bullets, and the screen dims. The darker the screen, the faster their luck will drop. This could potentially tie in Wolverine’s berserker style of fighting, where he could heal as much as he kills in the game.

Insomniac Games could also go on a similar route with the recent God of War games in the Norse Saga, where Kratos and Atreus have health bars but can recover using healing stones – albeit this would require some creative licence to explain the need for an external force aiding in Logan’s healing. The possibilities are endless, and this is an opportunity for the developers to get creative with this power that Logan often sees as a curse. Healing and invincibility may sound good on paper and look good in films, but this is a hurdle for an interactive experience.

Marvel’s Wolverine will be released in Fall 2026, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
