Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 ‘Keyword’ Has Reportedly Been Decided, and Just Like the Previous Installments, It’ll Affect the Development from the Ground Up

The gaming community is eager to see Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, especially after the traumatic ending of Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi is working to deliver a satisfying ending, and he has shared some details about how far they are into the development phase. Square Enix has set the bar high with the remake trilogy, but their secret to success could not be simpler.

Each entry in the remake trilogy comes with a keyword, and Hamaguchi reveals the significance of each one for their games. Working on this upcoming project will carry on the tradition of Hamaguchi’s design philosophy, which will then act as a throughline for all three entries to be experienced as a continuous story.

In a recent interview, Hamaguchi revealed new details about the final part of the remake trilogy and their design philosophy. Remaking games may seem like a cash grab by repackaging the same story with flashy graphics and new gameplay, but Square Enix had a clear vision of what they wanted to do with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.

Hamaguchi went on to discuss the significance of keywords used while working on Remake and Rebirth, which influenced the themes of each game:

“Essentially, you nailed the exact words, but the keyword that underpins our design philosophy and the themes of each game, and certainly remake, the keyword we used as a basis for it, was reunion.”

As the first part of the trilogy, Hamaguchi likened Cloud’s return to the community’s reunion with the characters. In Rebirth, Cloud and the party have been through a lot, and their bonds have strengthened since then. He continued:

“This obviously refers to the relationships between the characters, how they get to know each other, and grow closer over the course of their journey. And that, as you say, affected the gameplay.”

The party’s friendship has deepened, and is reflected heavily in gameplay through the Synergy abilities. Party members can combine their attacks to deal more damage, and it goes to show how much they value each other in combat. In the third game, Hamaguchi revealed that this will be carried over in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3.

Hamaguchi is optimistic that fans will see Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 sooner rather than later. The studio began working on it immediately after the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and the process will likely feel similar, especially with the same keyword strategy:

“In that sense, we also have a new keyword for the third installment in the series. I can’t tell you what it is yet. But it’s very present and influences and shapes the gameplay and the gaming experience , just like the keywords of the first two games.”

There is no telling what the keyword for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will be, but fans can expect it to feel similar to the first two games. Square Enix took a classic tale and expanded it in ways that couldn’t have been done in 1997, and it’s clear Hamaguchi doesn’t just want to retell a story, but give it the respect it deserves.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 doesn’t have a release date as of yet, but it is in development.
