Gamescom 2026 has been and gone, but in between unannounced game previews like Ritual Tides, or incredible presentations like Warlock, I got the chance to sit down and chat with two of the people responsible for the third entry in the A Plague Tale franchise, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

Carol-Ann Bañules, Lead Writer, and Valerian Robert, Lead Level Designer, was good enough to have a quick chat about various topics relating to Asobo Studios’ latest release, and the franchise as a whole. Between chatting about the story of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, how the studio works with two characters but intends the story to be a single player experience, and much more, I got to the topic of what the future holds for the studio’s next game, long rumoured for a few years at this point, and whether it was going to be A Plague Tale 3 or like Resonance, potentially a spin-off of another character from the previous games. I asked “Are you likely to do A Plague Tale 3, or are you spinning off into an almost Marvel way of doing things with spin-offs to different characters?”. Robert said:

“We’ll see what the future holds. We never say never, but for now there are no plans.”

When pushed on the latter, and asking both Bañules and Robert for their own personal choices for spin-offs, Robert continued:

I mean, there are a lot of characters that could have their own adventure if we wanted to. The kids in Innocence, for instance, like Mélie could be interesting. Arnaud could be interesting. There’s a lot of characters that we could develop, but for now, there are absolutely no plans on doing that.”

I’ll be shocked if there’s not a third mainline instalment to the Plague Tale franchise, and think some of the above is media-trained bluster, but hopefully we get some clarification on what title is next up soon.

I’ve been a big fan of the franchise since the first game, and was surprised to see the more action heavy direction the studio was going with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, and in my 4/5 review of the game, I said “…the visuals of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy are some of the best of this generation”, and “By the end of the game, even with the higher difficulty enemies taking over compared to the weaker, easily dispensed ones, I’d still gotten to grips with the combat system that I felt like I’d grown alongside Sophia’s skills.”. The combat is a big departure for the franchise in this entry, and the feeling of growth alongside Sophia was one of my favourite parts, so it’s hard to see exactly how the studio addresses regressing in abilities with Amicia in any potential mainline A Plague Tale 3.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is out now on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC.
