1666: Amsterdam has stoked the proverbial gaming industry fires numerous times over the last few months. Since the announcement at Summer Game Fest in 2026, to its Early Access release two months later in August, it’s been a tumultuous time for the title.
Set in an alternative, supernatural version of Amsterdam, you’ll take control of Noa, a witch who has to find and dispatch a powerful group of hidden individuals, the Originals. Between yourself and your cat, you need to find and kill the demonic group, all while three timelines weave through one another for the player to keep track of.
With the demo releasing, and then Early Access shortly thereafter, players accused the title of using Generative AI throughout, due to odd-looking art and unusual design choices. Now, former Ubisoft producer and Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets has released a new documentary detailing his journey from his early days to present day, and how 1666: Amsterdam was created, developed, and now released.
Speaking in the documentary, ‘The Road to Early Access’, game creator Patrice Désilets tells us of his struggles, strifes, and how he came to make the game after so long, saying:
“I’ve had this thing in my head for sixteen years!”
1666: Amsterdam is currently available on PC via Steam Early Access.
