id Software has released a statement after one of the most up and down weeks in its history. With its biggest DLC to date releasing, DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations, in which included a new chain weapon that revolutionised the experience from the slower movement of the base game, revisited classic levels, albeit in a different way, and offered a glimpse at the future of DOOM that fans have mostly warmed to. And then, the day after the DLC dropped, the studio was gutted.

Caught in the crossfire of the many, many XBOX layoffs, studio closures, sales and independence, id Software reportedly lost the majority of their developers, with some reports totalling the loss at over 100 staff members, which left many wondering how the studio would recover or even maintain any semblance of the quality they’re known for. Now, id Software has released a statement to thank fans, and quell any worries for its future.

In the statement, which looks to steady the ship and calm worried fans, id Software said “The team today about the same size we were when making DOOM (2016). We have always had a flat studio where everyone is a maker, and we will remain true to that philosophy moving forward.”, which highlights not only how much the studio and its projects have grown in the last 10 years, but also the quality they managed with a similar sized team 10 years ago.

It was also revealed shortly after the layoffs that id Software were in fact pitching new projects right before the carnage ensued, including a potential Perfect Dark sequel, a Western with a Westworld-feel, and a couple of others. What could have been?

How do you feel about the layoffs? Do you think id Software will recover, or maintain what it once was? Have you played DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations? Let us know in the comments below!
