DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations is less than a week away, but after a behind-closed-doors preview with Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton last week, we’ve seen some of what is in store for everyone when it drops, and it’s potentially changing the franchise for good.
With Martin mentioning the size of this first DLC is as big as DOOM Eternal’s two combined, he took some time to address and explain one of the new additions to the franchise, the Slayer’s new toy, the Chain Spear:
“The star of the DLC is the all new Chain Spear, as seen in the trailer. Most all of the progression throughout the DLC is built around the spear. it’ll take you the entire campaign to fully upgrade it… you can quick-switch between the spear and the shield, there’s some great high skill meta’s to explore there. You can use the spear exclusively to dominate, if that’s what you prefer or revert back to the shield entirely, but by endgame, spearplay will be required, especially in the master arenas.”
Elaborating further, he continued:
“So the spear, the DLC is built around it. It adds movement tech to Dark Ages combat, complete with a dash and grapple hook. We’re gonna make the tanky Dark Ages slayer fly. You’ll feel like a monster truck with a jet engine strapped to your back.”
Having seen some footage of the Chain Spear in action, I can say that players who complained or criticized the base game of DOOM: The Dark Ages for ‘being slower and taking away the speed of the franchise’ will be pleasantly surprised here. You’ll be zipping through the large maps with speed and grace, all whilst raining down hell on the demons below. It looks like it’s completely changed the speed of the game, bringing the much quicker and hectic experience back that we had in DOOM Eternal.
What do you make of the new Chain Spear? Are you going to be playing DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations when it releases? Let us know in the comments!
DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations releases on July 7th on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
