Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations was revealed at Summer Game Fest, and we’ve been desperate for details ever since. After a behind-closed-doors preview, we have so much more information ahead of the July 7th release, and it’s all pretty exciting!

The preview itself was over an hour, featuring a new trailer, gameplay, and a Q+A with Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton, both of ID Software and two of the main minds behind the new direction of DOOM over the last ten years. When discussing the DLC itself, Martin was eager to impress upon everyone the size and scope of the upcoming release:

“It’s titled a DLC, but it’s much more than that, coming in at about 10-12 hours size wise depending on your difficulty. It’s equal to the two DLCs we release for DOOM Eternal combined, and we’ve spent a year polishing the game. Every encounter and secret, the boss fights, the spear, it al lfeels great. It’s a premium experience like you’d expect from ID Software.”

Martin also said of the DLC:

“Even though it’s a DLC, the difficulty, while higher than the base game, is balanced and well paced. With a wide variety of challenge on offer for all players. Just tune the sliders for what feels good for you,”

After the pre-recorded gameplay demo that was shown off, there was a live Q+A, and Martin did contradict himself slightly, in saying that he hoped players wouldn’t immediately push the sliders up to max like some do, as that’d result in them thinking some bosses are “broken, and you’ll think we look stupid”, but the opportunity for customising the difficulty is always there, thanks to the game’s incredible accessibility options/sliders.

With new traversal mechanics being brought into DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations, there’s a greater impetus put on backtracking throughout the map, uncovering new areas and directions to go, and it looked a lot more reminiscent of the original DOOM in that regard, from all those years ago.

DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations releases on July 7th on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
