Charlie Cox left a lasting impression as Matt Murdock in various Marvel projects, but the gaming community later fell in love with his performance as Gustave. Cox was one of the highlights of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and while he had limited screen time on this game, he didn’t waste a second and made the fans fall in love with his character.
While most of the English cast have publicly spoken about their time working on the project, Cox has been rather busy filming the second season of Marvel Television’s Daredevil: Born Again for Disney+. Cox has been absent from panels and conventions, but he had a brief opportunity to talk about his time voicing Gustave and shared an impressive detail about his performance.
Spoilers will be discussed beyond this point.
Charlie Cox Revealed How Much Time He Spent in the Recording Studio Voicing Gustave

It is easy to forget that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was developed by a relatively small team consisting of newcomers and veterans to the video game industry with a limited budget. Sandfall Interactive was fortunate to be backed by Kepler Interactive as a publisher with more connections to secure high-profile names, such as Andy Serkis as Renoir and Charlie Cox as Gustave.
Cox and his English co-stars were brought in to voice the characters, while the motion capture was done in-house at the Sandfall Interactive offices in Montpellier. This was a much cheaper and efficient approach by the studio to save time and resources. While on a panel at the Washington State Summer Con, a fan asked Cox about his time recording Gustave, and he revealed he didn’t spend nearly as much time as his co-stars.
“And people keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations and I feel like a total fraud”

Voice-overs may seem much easier than performing motion capture, but Cox made it look like a walk in the park. Cox revealed he only spent 4 hours in the recording studio voicing Gustave. If you have played through the first act, you will only get to spend time with Gustave in the first act, which is roughly 5-6 hours, depending on your playstyle.
Gustave has plenty of iconic moments and quotes, and fans are in awe of how Cox quickly nailed these lines. It is also worth mentioning that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is Charlie Cox’s first video game and voice-over job, and the fans’ reception is proof that he delivered an exceptional performance.
