There’s a little game on the horizon that you might have heard of – GTA 6. In what is sure to be a cultural phenomenon and a game launch bigger than any others before it, it turns out that for a long while, it was a much bigger endeavour than what we’ll end up with. It has to be said though, before everyone starts throwing a strop, this is still the biggest map for a game from Rockstar Games, so it’s nothing to sniff at.

Once Known as ‘Project Americas’, GTA 6 Was Massive

Thanks to a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, we now know a wealth of new information on the upcoming crime-caper. Go back eleven years to 2015, Rob Nelson, the co-studio head of Rockstar was headed to Miami on what ended up being a research trip.

As mentioned, GTA 6 was planned to be large scale, with far more than the studio’s version of Miami included. In fact, it’s reported that the original intention was to include areas of both North and South America, although specific areas weren’t mentioned.

We can only speculate at what other areas would have been included at this point, but a giant map connecting the various cities is something that has been dreamed of for years by GTA fans, with some going as far as modding in GTA 4 into GTA 5.

Between the development of Red Dead Redemption 2 taking so many staff and resources, COVID-19, and wanting to avoid ‘crunch’ in the workplace that Rockstar became synonymous with thanks to reports from Eurogamer in 2019, the game’s map has been scaled back, at least, but not necessarily the gameplay.

Hopes are high with players, regarding GTA 6, and it’s yet to be seen if Rockstar Games can stick the landing, but with the release date nearly upon us, we don’t have long to wait.

GTA 6 releases on November 19th on PlayStation 5, and XBOX Series X|S.
