Marathon ‘DOA’ If It Launches with Console Easy Mode Feature

Marathon is an upcoming first-person shooter online multiplayer game developed by Bungie. The game will use a live-service structure and pit players against one another in a race to extract as many items as possible and fill their vaults, then beat the opposition in a firefight.

The premise may seem simple, but the spirit of competition is what most players are looking forward to; however, early gameplay suggests there won’t be much of a struggle since accuracy is not an issue.

There is no denying that Marathon has an exciting premise, flashy visuals, and great gameplay; however, the developers designed this project to be a PvP experience. Players are meant to fight against other players with nothing but their wit and skill, and a handful of streamers and content creators gained access to an early alpha build but found something rather disturbing.

The alpha build appears to have an aim assist or aimbot feature for the mouse and keyboard control scheme, which is unideal for a competitive shooter title. This feature removes the idea of having a fighting chance or equal odds against the enemy, especially since they can automatically aim and lock on with pinpoint accuracy.

Some players shared their concerns and refused to play Marathon at launch if the developers kept this feature. In theory, players could run and gun without taking the time to aim or locate their targets since the in-game system can do that for them.

Aimbot and aim assist may help struggling players, but this shouldn’t be considered in a competitive landscape. Marathon could be dead in the water before it gets a chance to shine if the developers include this feature at launch. The gaming community will not take the PvP element seriously if they and their opponents rely on a targeting system to do all the heavy lifting.
