Red Dead Redemption Fans Are Baffled About Rockstar Games’ Decision to Port the Original Game to Current-Gen Systems

The original Red Dead Redemption was released in 2010, and it was a breath of fresh air. After a winning streak with the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the game developers have set new objectives to take the gaming community to the Wild West. Rather than another senseless open-world sandbox filled with mysteries and exciting missions, Rockstar Games took a different approach with storytelling.

A few years ago, the game was remastered and ported to the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC; however, some fans thought it was odd not to go all the way with current-gen systems, until just recently.

When the remaster was released in 2023 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms, some fans wondered if Red Dead Redemption would receive a native port for current-generation systems. The game ran smoothly on last-generation hardware and received minor improvements on devices like the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series consoles.

The gaming community was somewhat satisfied, especially if it meant that this could be a sign of more remasters for more demanding games to come in the future. However, out of nowhere, Rockstar Games announced a next-gen port for the original Red Dead game, along with improvements for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, mobile ports for smartphones and other handheld devices through a Netflix subscription.

It was certainly a surprise, especially now that Red Dead Redemption will be playable on Android and iOS devices in a few weeks. This should have been seen coming, considering Rockstar Games gave the same treatment to the definitive edition of the GTA trilogy. While this is a good thing for new players to dive into this world, others can’t help but think of another game that deserves a current-gen tune-up.

Some fans are upset that the original Red Dead game has received a few ports, while the prequel is being left in the dust. Red Dead Redemption 2 recently became the fourth-best-selling game of all time, which is no small feat, but Rockstar Games seems satisfied with where it is.

There were reports from trusted insiders about a next-gen port being in the works, but this could be used as a Hail Mary. Rockstar Games has kicked the hornet’s nest after announcing the delay of GTA 6 yet again, and the developers could salvage the situation by giving the community the Red Dead Redemption 2 port, but on their own terms.

Red Dead Redemption is coming to the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, Netflix, Android, and iOS devices on December 2, 2025.
