The gaming community was understandably upset when the news broke about Warner Bros Games locking away Monolith’s Nemesis System behind a wall of patent ownership. The driving force behind Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War, Monolith received a lot of praise for its innovative take on an army of Orcs that remembered how Talion and Celebrimbor took them down when they came back to exact revenge.
While the Nemesis System was slated to return in Monolith’s take on Wonder Woman, that project regrettably never saw the light of day as Monolith was shut down and Warner Bros retained ownership of its incredible invention.
A New Twist in the Tale
However, Sony might be Nemesis Systems’ saviour if rumours about its intention to purchase Warner Bros’ assets are true. InsiderGaming reports that Sony is looking to acquire the HBO Max streaming service, game IPs, and several assets from the embattled American publisher in the wake of its recent slump over the years.

While that could include any number of things, it’s indeed hard to think that Sony would pass up on the chance to acquire rights to the Nemesis System, considering that there’s nothing quite like it in modern gaming, especially on current-gen consoles. It’s an opportunity to up the ante on its PlayStation exclusives that would leave its competition scrambling to catch up if the Japanese behemoth were to implement it in meaningful ways.
How Could the Nemesis System Benefit Sony?
For starters, it could be a very nifty addition to games like the Horizon franchise or perhaps the upcoming sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. If used in the sequel to Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy could very well find herself pushed to her limits if the machines began to learn and adapt to her tactics, returning stronger, faster, and meaner to surprise her once she takes them down.

Or perhaps Peter Parker or Miles Morales could find that New York City’s criminals find their way back into the fray, looking to turn the tables on the superheroes who put them away. Sony’s exclusives are a great place for the Nemesis System to showcase what it can do to take an ordinary gaming experience and turn it into an unpredictable, often humorous take on a traditional open-world.
It could even work in a game like God of War for similar reasons. The possibilities Monolith’s invention brings to the table are as endless today as they were back in 2017, when it was last able to flex its muscles. While neither Sony nor Warner Bros has responded to a request for further comment, this is a rumour that many in the gaming community would hope is true.
