Dinoblade may just be the most unique take on the Soulslike genre we’ve ever seen. We’ve had knockoffs, games influenced by Hidetaka Miyazaki but not directly Soulslike, and games in the genre that are hard for the sake of it. We’ve never had a game where you play as a Spinosaurus armed with a huge sword, ready to go to battle with other dinosaurs. Well, now we do. That’s Dinoblade in a nutshell, and we were lucky enough to speak to creator Jean Nguyen about his own indie game, balancing it with his full time position at Sucker Punch Productions, and what success looks like to him.

On the subject of the game’s success though, Nguyen revealed that the amount of sales isn’t the only driving force for him, but he wants to see a high rating for the game too:

“At this time of answering the question, 0 sales since the game isn’t live yet but I hope I get enough sales to take care of my family future. I also am more eager at the ratings because a high rating will mean people are enjoying the game. The whole point of working in the game industry to me is to make games that can give people a good time, create laughs and excitement, escape reality, make new friends and so forth so I’m really looking forward to seeing people have fun with Dinoblade.”

In a time where the gaming industry is getting smaller than ever, developer wise, with seemingly constant layoffs, it’s all too easy to get jaded and cynical and attribute success to just the amount of sales, so seeing an indie developer on their debut game hoping also for critical success as well is a welcome sight.

Dinoblade is available to purchase on Steam today, and potentially consoles in the future.
