You’d think Phantom Blade Zero would let up a little after it’s intense and manic opening, but nope, here we are in another boss fight, this time against The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, and it couldn’t be more different than the one you just finished against Zuo Shang.

Don’t worry though, as different as it is, it’s equally as beatable, and by the end of this guide we’ll have walked you through everything you need to know to beat The Hunt, Hunter of the Order in Phantom Blade Zero.

How to Beat The Hunt, Hunter of the Order in Phantom Blade Zero

Whereas Zuo Shang’s fight was a huge, open arena with plenty of space to move, the fight against The Hunt, Hunter of the Order couldn’t be any more different.

This whole boss fight will take place on the cart you’ve been riding down the mountain path. You’ll have just killed and escaped from two minions of his, after they were chasing and attacking you from behind, and then The Hunt, Hunter of the Order appears to make your life harder.

Landing on the cart behind you as you control the horses, the fight is one where you’ll need to keep your wits about you. The Hunt, Hunter of the Order has several attacks to keep in mind, despite the small fighting space:

  • He will periodically jump into the air before slamming into the cart. Being that it’s not very big, time your parry properly otherwise you’ll end up hurt.
  • He’ll jump backwards onto the horses and sling his weapons at you, you can parry these relatively easily.
  • His normal attacks inside the cart will be standard combos.

Just like the fight with Zuo Shang, and in fact every fight in Phantom Blade Zero, you’re not going to want to stay on the back foot. You need to continue attacking him, and make sure to parry when appropriate, as they will both drop his guard meter, and when that’s empty, he’ll be stunned.

When this happens use your Power Surge with L2 to unleash a powerful combo on him, and then continue the standard attacks. If you want to mix it up, I’d recommend also throwing in some attacks with triangle, the Sha-chi attacks, as these offer The Hunt, Hunter of the Order a mixture of attacks to try and defend against.

It’s likely that due to the constraints of the arena you’ll take some damage, so be prepared to use your health potions with down on the D-Pad, and then continue your onslaught.

And that’s how you beat The Hunt, Hunter of the Order in Phantom Blade Zero, and the last you’ll see of him… or is it? The trophy ‘The Heart’s Journey’ will pop right after the cutscene, and you’ll be able to continue on.

How to Beat The Hunt, Hunter of the Order (Second Fight)

Yeah, in what is no surprise whatsoever, it isn’t the last we see of The Hunt, Hunt of the Order. Far from it. Pretty much from the off after we dropped into the chasm below off the cart, The Hunt, Hunter of the Order has taunted and goaded us as we explore Weeping Creek Valley. He shows his face as you enter the tower where you’ll find the start of A Severed Mindseal Tale, right after the end of the Purge the Sect Tale where you get the bow, and at that point, you know you’re close.

I’d suggest finding and beating Hua, Deadly Betrothed before you attempt to fight The Hunt, Hunter of the Order for the second time, firstly because of the extra resources, but also because of her weapon, Scarlet Wraithblade. Along with Jagged Steel, it was one of my two weapons I entered the fight with, and offered something different to that of my main weapon.

Make sure you’ve upgraded your weapons as high as possible, for example I had both my main weapons at Level 5 before starting, and my two Phantom Edges at Level 3 each. Without doing this, you’re making this fight so much harder than it needs to be.

To find The Hunt, Hunter of the Order to fight, you’ll need to work your way through the tower with the furnace, and head out the back, and then across the wooden bridge in front of you. This is right at the top of Weeping Creek Valley, so pretty difficult to miss at this point. You’ll come to a big open area with a waterfall and a lake, and a bell right before. You see this, you’re in the right place.

First Phase Against The Hunt, Hunter of the Order

Phantom Blade Zero isn’t a Soulslike, but this fight has all the hallmarks of a boss fight of one. It even has two phases, and a huge transformation in the middle! The first phase of this fight is far simpler than the second, so you’ll want to try and keep all your medicines for the second half.

The Hunt, Hunter of the Order will come out swinging, and just like the first fight, has his iconic Hunter’s Chain Sickle weapons that he throws through the air at you, damaging you from afar. For the most part, his combos in this first phase are easy to predict. If you’re too far away, he’ll jump into the air and attack you from above, using the chains on the sickles in a sweeping motion.

Either Guard throughout, risking your Guard Meter, or Parry. You’ll know you’ve parried properly when you see the Gold sparks appear on screen. He usually finishes this combo with a blue attack, so be prepared for this. If you see it, press L1 to counter it, and you’ll appear behind him. Attack at will here, as attacking from the back will momentarily stun him.

When you’re close, he tends to do one of two things. He’ll do a version of the above combo, but in front of you and on the floor, or he’ll try and grab you with a red attack. You HAVE to be ready for this, and when it happens, press R1 to counter this one. If you don’t, he’ll grab you, knee you in the head, and stun you, leaving you massively vulnerable.

As his health dwindles, you’ll see him mix up his attacks, including sending a tornado storm towards you, which I’d recommend you dodge far away from, and also summoning purple chains in the sky above. Don’t do anything other than dodging at this point. You can’t defend against it.

As I mentioned, the first phase of this fight is far simpler than the second, so when you kill him, and think you’ve beaten him completely, unfortunately you’re wrong.

Second Phase Against The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe

Like a bad smell that won’t go away, the second phase against The Hunt, Hunter of the Order comes as a surprise. He mutates and transforms, leaving Soul shocked and surprised as he sees Transcension and Mindseal fusing together, clearly a rarity in the world of Phantom Blade Zero, and sprouts more arms to attack you with.

Now, unlike Soulslike games, Phantom Blade Zero won’t punish you if you die in this second phase. You won’t have to beat his first phase again if you do it once. It’s a novel approach to boss fights, but with The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe in mind, it’s a great one.

He doesn’t actually change much up in this second phase, beyond barely attacking with blue attacks, and moreso coming at you with a mixture of his red attack (far more prevalent), the purple chains, and tornado storms. He’s more aggressive, quicker, and his combos last longer.

It was during this second phase I was especially thankful I’d upgraded Jagged Steel to Level 5, because at that level, it allows you to press triangle after a combo and add extra damage, which quickly becomes second nature, and does some serious damage if you use it right.

One addition to The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe’s attack roster is the new type of grab he will do. You may see it in the first phase on rare occasions, but he depends on it in this second phase, grabbing you, and forcing you into a quick-time event. Press triangle rapidly and you’ll break free and damage him; miss it or you’re not quick enough, and he’ll headbutt you. It’s easy to win if you’re paying attention.

This second phase of the boss fight, now against The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe, is one you’ll likely need to practice with a few times. His attack timings have changed drastically from the first phase, and as mentioned, his aggression feels tenfold here. He doesn’t let up, won’t stop attacking you, and won’t give you a minute to breathe. A few tips, if you’re struggling.

  • Any time you’re close to death, dodge away several times and heal.
  • If he grabs you, break out of it by ‘winning’ the quick-time event.
  • Make sure to Parry as much as possible, as this will bring his own Guard Meter down, whilst just guarding will drain your own.
  • Don’t stand still, always keeping moving. Always dodge and run away from tornado storm and purple chain moves.
  • Change your weapon regularly. Not only is it good to mix up your two weapons, it refills your meter.
  • Make use of your Phantom Edge (Dread Axe is best), and Power Surge (Jagged Steel’s is best) when appropriate. Usually when he’s stunned after you’ve drained his Guard Meter.
  • Don’t just button bash. This is a quick way to die quickly.
  • Be patient, sometimes the best way to attack is to parry a couple more times.
