Remothered: Red Nun’s Legacy Ending Explained

Well, the ending has taken place, and there is a lot to unpack, so let’s just begin by talking about what is happening in the final room with all the Novices, Angelo, Agata, Rosemary, and Susan.

To put things simply, this is where we find out that Rosemary is actually Sister Lindsay, who we have been seeing in memories throughout the game, who was brainwashed to set the fire that was thought to have killed Sister Gloria, who we now know is Angelo’s mother, but what we find out is that Sister Gloria actually lived through the fire and became a nurse for her family’s rivals, the Feltons, until she was discovered by Rosemary.

After we learn this, it is revealed by Angelo that the blood of the Ashmanns was well suited to the Phenoxyl and was capable of taking it without suffering, meaning he required a descendant of the Ashmanns to become a vessel for his mother, and his goal is to use Agata.

Now, here comes the more shocking part: while discussing this, Angelo mentions that he isn’t the sole survivor of the Ashmann bloodline, but in fact Susan is also a descendant of Gloria, as while in the employ of the Feltons, Gloria fell in love and had another child, which was revealed to be Susan.

Understandably, Susan had no idea of this, as her father took her back to America away from Gloria, raising her without any knowledge of Gloria, so Susan had no idea she was an Ashmann, but the next part is where things get a bit weird.

It turns out that Angelo had actually spent years following Gloria and shaping her life so that she would eventually work for him in his clinic, fall in love with him, and eventually have Agata, all with the goal of using Agata as a vessel due to her being a fully fledged Ashmann due to incest.

However, after finding out all this information, this provides Susan with both a new purpose and an idea on how to beat Angelo at his own game. This provided Susan with the idea that because she was also an Ashmann, she would now be able to take Agata’s place as the vessel, turning herself into Gloria, saving her daughter in the process.

This then leads the player back to the convent to follow through with this plan as they take Agata’s place in the scorching fire of rebirth to become Gloria and the Red Nun, as she then slaughters all the Novices in incredibly gruesome ways before bringing us back to the ritual room.

Now we are back in the ritual room; we witness Rosemary clutching Agata tightly as the Red Nun moves towards Angelo, showing some form of motherly love and then some, before shoving her bone sword through the back of his head and out of his mouth, acknowledging that she and Angelo should have died in the fire and shouldn’t have continued to live.

After this, Mt. Etna begins to erupt, causing the building to crumble and fall apart, giving Rosemary and Agata the opportunity to leave and get to safety, while the Red Nun also summons the moths into the burning room in an attempt to eradicate them along with herself and her now-dead son Angelo.

Finally, after witnessing all of this, we move to see that Rosemary and Agata have left the villa safely before again moving onto an older Agata explaining that Rosemary raised her until she got too old, dying peacefully as a metronome ticks in the background.

But this is not the end, as we can see what Susan says to Agata, which explains that after her mother sacrificed her life for Agata so that Agata didn’t need to, while also providing her the choice to live a life she wishes and to make the choices that she feels are right.

Before Agata makes her final choice that affects the franchise itself, she goes on to mention that this story has been caused by the numerous women who have been hurt by men who have been hurt themselves, and that these women suffered needlessly, and she has chosen to break this cycle, which finishes the game with Agata stopping the metronome, seemingly signifying that, sadly, the Remothered franchise will be no more.
