Phantom Blade Zero may not be a Soulslike, according to S-Game, but it definitely shares a few features and mechanics with the genre. One such mechanic is the hard-to-beat, optional-and-hidden bosses in the game, and that’s perfectly encapsulated by Hua, Deadly Betrothed.

You might find her by accident, or your might just follow your instincts and follow the environmental clues and notes on your journey, but either way, if you’re here, you’re likely struggling with a boss fight that throws more than just heavy hits at you. Don’t worry, by the end of this guide you’ll know every attack, every move, and more importantly, exactly how to beat Hua, Deadly Betrothed in Phantom Blade Zero.

How to Beat Hua, Deadly Betrothed in Phantom Blade Zero

How to Find Hua, Deadly Betrothed

Hua, Deadly Betrothed is in Weeping Creek Valley, the opening area of Phantom Blade Zero, but is still easily missed. To find her, you’ll need to head to the Sha-Chi Furnace towards the top of the area, where you’ll meet the Friendly Shadow Warden and begin the A Severed Mindseal Tale.

On the very bottom floor, from the front dead, head towards the top-right of the area behind the stairs. You’ll notice what looks like a hole, but is in fact a wooden platform. Be careful! Stepping onto the wooden bridge will take you from the temple and you’ll slide to the very bottom of the area, an area you can’t otherwise get to at this point.

Once you land, you’ll notice a skirmish occurring beneath you. You can get involved and make it quicker, or wait for them to duke it out, either way, once they’re all gone, you’ll get a note mentioning the arranged marriage of Hua. Head left and up the hill, where another note is waiting for you, and then into the wide, open area nearby. This is where Hua, Deadly Betrothed is, and where the fight will begin.

How to Beat Hua, Deadly Betrothed

As soon as you walk into the open area, a cutscene will begin, with Hua asking if you are her beloved, and if you have a Flesh Lily to give her. This is, of course, the item Yu’er asked for when you first met her, and is a quest that so far, has had no icon to head towards, to complete it.

To beat Hua, Deadly Betrothed in Phantom Blade Zero, there’s much more than just her own attacks to worry about. She uses both summons and the environment to her benefit, and you’ll have to focus on multiple things at once if you hope to succeed.

Environmental wise, she will make red flowers grow at your feet, both with magic and also where her sword lands. These will hurt you and explode if you sit in them too long, so run and dodge away from them when you see them at your feet. Similarly, she will summon huge, white flowers that hone in on you like a homing missile. Same thing, run and dodge away from these, as both of the mentioned attacks can decimate your Guard Meter, leaving you very vulnerable. If you feel you can parry them, then do that.

Melee attacks wise, Hua, Deadly Betrothed is faster than her slow walk and giant weapon might indicate. She will pepper you with fast-paced combos that you’ll want to block throughout, and in the early moments, she’ll end it with a blue attack. Remember, just like Peng Meng, The Axemaster; The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, and any other bosses you’ll come across, you’ll need to use L1 to block these. Anything else, it’ll hurt you badly if it hits.

She also has a red attack, which you’ll need to use R1 to avoid and counter. You can try and dodge your way out of these attacks, but if you mistime it, it’ll cost you, and it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Hua, Deadly Betrothed is almost telepathic in her defense, as by now you’ve likely gotten the Feather Bow from the Purge the Sect Tale, but she will teleport more often than not when you shoot at her. Same thing for your Dread Axe, meaning these weapons, while slow and powerful, end up being useless here. Don’t use either of them unless she’s stunned.

Talking of stunned. I used a Level 6 upgraded Jagged Steel as my main weapon, but I still didn’t use my Power Surge L2 move any other time than at the end of her stun. While it can stunlock her, her own attacks are too quick and will regularly interrupt it. Save it for when she’s defenseless.

If your own Guard Meter drops to nothing, and you’re stunned, you will notice her grab you. At this point, there’s nothing you can do but watch as she grabs you, and then goes to decapitate you. If you have enough health beforehand, you may survive, but there’s every chance this ends up being a one hit kill for you. Oh, and those white and red flowers I already mentioned? They result in the same thing!
