One click and you're done. Thank you!
Phantom Blade Zero finally has given us a boss you’re not all-but-guaranteed to beat on the first try. Sure, Zuo Shang was an opening tutorial, and The Hunt, Hunter of The Order is a two-parter, but when you come up against Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute in Phantom Blade Zero, it’s beginning to get serious.
If you’re here, you’re struggling, and believe me, that’s perfectly acceptable in a game like Phantom Blade Zero. No matter the difficulty you’re on, Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute will provide somewhat of a challenge, and by the end of this guide, you’ll know what you need to in order to beat him with ease.
How to Beat Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute in Phantom Blade Zero
Before you can beat the third boss in the game, you’ll have had to find him. By now you’ve headed to the little shack and found out about the Four Fierce Axes, as well as killing the enemy holding the thread and barring your entry.
You’ve then made your way back to be re-introduced to a once-thought-dead The Hunt, Hunter of the Order, and then as you climbed the hill, learned of a dangerous new weapon that cleaves enemies and leaves them bleeding profusely.
Of course, this is the exact weapon that the boss Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute has in his hands against you, but what can you do? As you head forward into the arena, you’ll see him fighting two minions, one of which will likely come towards you when you enter.
When you’ve dispatched those two between you, his attention will be focused entirely on you, and thanks to the hefty weapon in his hands, you need to be paying full attention otherwise you will die very quickly.
As mentioned, the Jagged Steel weapon itself can inflict Bleeding and trigger Blood Loss, which if it does, can be a big headache for you. Unlike the other two boss fights before this one, you’re not going to want to go in balls-to-the-wall and attack mindlessly. Instead, patience is key here.
The name of the game with this boss fight is to leave him entirely defenseless, so you can attack him without worrying about getting hurt in return. To do this, you’ll need to study his attacks and focus your energy on parrying, which will lower his guard meter.
When this hits zero, he’ll stand still, stunned and vulnerable. This is when you’ll unload on him. If you have a Power Surge move stored at any point during the fight, you’ll want to use this right before he comes back to his senses and his guard meter refills, as it’ll effectively stunlock him for the length of the combo.
Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute has a few combos you need to be mindful of:
- He will start slashing at you, and as you block, he’ll grow stronger and more frenzied. He’ll stab at you, and this should be an indicator he’s about to jump in the air and slam you. Parry this also!
- He’ll use a blue attack during a three/four hit combo, so make sure to Parry these with L1.
- Sometimes his red attack will appear out of nowhere mid-combo. Don’t forget, use R1 here.
It’s important not to get greedy in the fight against Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute, especially in the latter moments of the boss fight. As bosses in Phantom Blade Zero go, he’s not highest on the list of difficulty, but he does get more aggressive the closer to death he is, and it can catch you by surprise.
Once he’s below a third of his total health, he will speed up, meaning your previous learned timings are out of the window. Despite the change-up in speed, the method stays the same.
You block and parry when necessary, dodge out of the way if you feel desperate and worried, and use down on the D-Pad to heal when your health gets low. Again, this is a boss fight of patience, so if you want to run across the other side of the arena to avoid getting hit and take a moment, do exactly that.
With regards to which weapon you should use? Well switching between the pair does fill up your Sha-Chi meter, allowing for more powerful triangle attacks, but I found Soul to be more useful against Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute while using the base weapon, Sanguine. One standard sword felt better, and with a longer reach, allowed me a little more safety than the dual-wielding Twin Sanguine did.

Once you see his health drop to zero, beyond being grateful that the boss fight is over, you’ll receive the Jagged Steel weapon for your own use. The effects and stats are the same for you as they were your former enemy:
- Damage – 240
- Status Effects – 124
- Inflicts Bleeding.
- Can trigger Blood Loss.
- L2 – Jagged Steel Rampage.
Now you have the weapon and can continue on with your adventure, but that’s how you beat Jagged Steel, The Frenzied Brute in Phantom Blade Zero.
