Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is officially coming in the next few months and hardcore fans are eager to get their hands on the highly anticipated title. The original game was released a few years back, and game director Hideo Kojima knew how to get the gaming community’s attention with some fancy packaging for the collector’s edition. These may cost more than standard editions, but purchasing these versions reflects how much a fan supports the developers and the game.
Unfortunately, times have changed and physical media is slowly dying out. While this may not affect players who have accepted the future of digital content, some are struggling to keep up and prefer to spend their money on something more tangible. It seems like Kojima Productions is following the same mistake made by fellow industry leaders in this regard.
The Lack of a Physical Disc in the Death Stranding 2 Collector’s Edition Is Baffling

During the SXSW panel for the Death Stranding sequel, Kojima was joined by some of the cast and crew on stage to present new details about the game. While the panel revealed plenty of new information about the story, what got the audience excited was the announcement of the Collector’s Edition.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will likely receive the same treatment as the first game, but one can’t help but notice that the more expensive versions don’t include a disc or a steelbook, but the full game is packed into a digital code, which didn’t sit right with traditional game collectors.
Some fans are already upset about the lack of a physical disc in the Collector’s Edition. The concept of purchasing a collector’s edition is for the collector to have something up for display or a sense of ownership about a certain product. Some players go out of their way to spend more money to acquire something extremely limited or expensive, but adding an actual disc seems too high of an ask nowadays.
Currently, there are three separate Death Stranding 2: On The Beach editions planned, with each offering a number of different items and of course, different prices. The prices of the multiple editions and the items included are:
- Standard Edition – $69.99
- Full Game Digital Download
- Digital Deluxe Edition – $79.99
