Deedlee Doo! Carkour! Review (PC) – A Collection of Claymation and Childlike Fun Like No Other

Deedlee Doo! Carkour! Review (PC) – A Collection of Claymation and Childlike Fun Like No Other

Recently, I got the opportunity to try out Nate Purkeypile’s new game, Deedlee Doo! Carkour!, before its release, as I attempted to climb to the top of the meowtain by using explosions and a rocket-propelled car in an attempt to beat a clock that was timing me.

Deedlee Doo! Carkour! is Full of Chaos and Humorous Moments

During my time with Deedlee Doo! Carkour! I was tasked with completing one objective and one objective alone. Said objective was to arrive at the top of the meowtain by using explosions to send my dinosaur-style car into the stratosphere to “Carkour” my way to the objective.

This may sound like an easy task, but it was quite a challenge as there were plenty of obstacles in my path that I had to overcome, the first obstacle being getting used to the controls. Although there weren’t many controls to get to grips with, there was a small learning curve when it came to using the explosions most effectively by positioning the car in the correct positions.

Due to clay rockets being fired from the sides, front, and bottom of the car, it was very important to ensure that my car was positioned perfectly so that I could fire the rockets in the optimal position to send me flying in the right direction. For a short amount of time, this did seem very difficult to do, but after practicing and learning how the explosions reacted with the car, it became all too easy to maneuver the vehicle into the best position possible for many of the obstacles.

What makes Deedlee Doo! Carkour! so interesting is the fact that Nate Purkeypile has created this project nearly entirely out of Clay, along with his kids, as each model was handcrafted and scanned into the game, adding a unique style to the game that many developers wouldn’t even think of.

While flying through Deedlee Doo! Carkour! I was able to see all kinds of claymation that has been created by Nate and his kids; whether it be different animals like birds, cats, or pigs or even buildings and vehicles, there were plenty of interesting things to see.

As well as using Clay to create Deedlee Doo! Carkour! Nate also tasked his kids with providing sounds for the game as well. For example, whenever I missed a jump and reset my car, Nate’s kids would laugh and playfully mock me, adding to the humor that the game was aiming for while also causing a slight frustration, but in a good way.

Along with Nate’s kids mocking the player, the game is also filled with mouth noises; each time the player shoots a rocket, lands on clay, uses their boost, and so much more, they can hear a mouth noise. For many gamers, this may not sound like something they would want to hear while playing a game, but it is very subtle and works well with the game, making it an effective use of sound.

Deedlee Doo! Carkour! Puts the Fun Back in Gaming

During my time with Deedlee Doo! Carkour!, it was safe to say that I enjoyed myself thoroughly, as it may be a fairly simple concept with only around 1-2 hours worth of gameplay depending on your skill in carkour; there was enough variety and challenge to keep me entertained even with Nate’s kids mocking me every few minutes.

Throughout my time playing, I was constantly laughing at the smallest things, especially since I was permitted to stream said game, allowing others to share in my glory as well as my defeat as I would miss simple jumps or launch myself into the abyss by my poor carkour skills. Even after completing said game, I was able to laugh with myself as I commented on how good the game was and how I would afterwards sit in a corner and cry, even though it was good fun.

In regards to Deedlee Doo! Carkour! the game itself ran very well with very few issues that I came across during my time with the title. I was able to complete the game in just under 2 hours while experiencing no major issues. The only issue I came across, which is understandable for a game such as this, was that some of the assets were not fully solid, allowing for moments in which I thought I made a jump and landed on the edge of an obstacle, but fell through instead.

Although this only happened a handful of times, it would be amiss of me not to mention it, as these moments did cause me problems, causing me to fail certain jumps; however, these are very trivial issues that could easily be fixed with a day one patch.

While playing Deedlee Doo! Carkour!, I couldn’t help but begin to compare it to games like Driving is Hard, as both games share a love for comedic value as well as a difficult challenge to overcome; however, Deedlee Doo! Carkour! has managed to provide an even more unique atmosphere that made me never want to put the controller down.
