It has been years since Escape From Tarkov was released to the public and took the gaming community by storm. It has grown throughout the years to be one of the best extraction shooters on the market. However, according to Dave Oshry, the co-founder of New Blood Interactive, this may have led to a bad trend in the gaming industry.
Escape From Tarkov May Have Started the Gaming Industry on a Path It Cannot Return From
During a recent podcast called Quad Damage, Dave Oshry discussed what they believe to be a trend that has done irreparable damage to the gaming industry. During the podcast, Dave Oshry spoke about Escape From Tarkov‘s success and the fact that its success has led to numerous games within the same genre and how this has damaged the gaming industry itself due to this trend.
Within the podcast, Dave mentions a recent example of this with FromSoftware’s upcoming project, The Duskbloods, and how even Hidetake Miyazaki and FromSoftware have begun to move into the extraction shooter genre, or at least into the extraction-based genre, due to The Duskbloods not being a shooter game.
The best way to describe The Duskbloods is as a Battle Royale and extraction-based game, but this further proves Dave’s comments, as extraction shooters aren’t the only genre that the gaming industry is focusing on, as battle royales have also been growing in popularity over the years, with numerous game developers jumping on the hype that games like Fortnite, Warzone, and PUBG created all those years ago.

Understandably, it is hard for game developers to keep creating new genres that the gaming industry can push into, but sadly, it is becoming more common for developers to follow the crowd rather than trying something new.
The prime example of this is that Bungie has recently announced its next project, Marathon, which will be an extraction shooter, showing that even a developer like Bungie, which was behind titles like Halo and Destiny, has also managed to cave and follow the crowd.
Sadly this isn’t the only example either, as there have been numerous developers who have followed other trends within the industry in an attempt to join in with the hype with games like Genshin Impact, Overwatch, CS: GO, and so many more as they create their versions in an attempt to compete and benefit from the trends that these games helped create.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first or the last time a genre has taken over the gaming industry, but hopefully in the future, developers will begin to reach out and create new and unique games that create even newer genres that the likes of Dave will be able to get behind.
