Artificial intelligence isn’t really a fan-favorite tech nowadays if you are active on social media platforms. A recent case where fans weren’t happy seeing this technology came when users pointed out the use of this tech in the sci-fi game The Alters. A user called EarthlingKira shared an image from the game that shows a prompt on a screen that reads, “Sure, here’s a revised version focusing purely on scientific and astronomical data.”
It has now become a topic of debate among the community on social media platforms. The game was released on June 13, 2025 and became an instant hit. 93% of the OpenCritic reviews recommend the game, so it comes as no surprise the users reacted this way.
The Alters Team Has Clarified Themselves

Following the fans backlash, The Alters team issued an statement on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter), where the post reads:
AI-generated assets were used strictly as temporary WIPs during the development process and in a very limited manner. Our team has always prioritized meaningful, handcrafted storytelling as one of the foundations of our game.
Steam requires full disclosures about a game that’s using generative AI for in-game content, but The Alters didn’t do so, further enraging the fans, which is clear in this Steam discussion.
This isn’t the first time a game has used generative AI in the game. Games like No Man’s Sky use it for procedural generation. In fact, Tom’s Hardware notes in one of their stories that Steam already has over 1,000 games using gen-AI themselves.
While not many people might like AI, and for good reasons, it can help make video games better. If you don’t believe this, Call of Duty: Black Ops‘ used AI to make enemies smarter. Use cases like this can definitely make a game’s experience better.
