“And that solves it”: Larian Studios’ and Baldur’s Gate 3’s Swen Vincke Once Again Has Player First Idea for Solving All Mod Legal Disputes

Director Swen Vincke has been collecting roses since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, and is now in the position where he can share his stance about certain things, like the modding community. Video game mods used to be frowned upon; however, Vincke embraces this activity and even supplies modders with the necessary tools to create wonders.

While not everyone is totally on board with modding, Vincke has a simple solution and even shared his two cents about how modding can increase a game’s relevance and longevity.

In a recent interview, director Swen Vincke shared his thoughts about the modding community and how he views it differently from his fellow game developers. Vincke has been vocal about his support for modders adding their unique flair to an existing project like Baldur’s Gate 3, and while others may see it as tarnishing a finished product, the director sees it as a way for fans to honor something great and make it even better:

As a company that owns IP, it’s perfectly possible to give somebody a license. So you could just say, ‘Hey, I think what you’re doing is really cool. Here’s a license.’ And that solves it. I think that’s what was done in this case. So, that’s the easiest way of dealing with it.

The gaming community fell in love with Baldur’s Gate 3, and Vincke treats this project as a way to connect with the player base.

After seeing his game as a mod in other games like Stardew Valley. Vincke wasn’t offended, nor have any animosity about the act since he sees it as modders honoring his work.

The work of modders represents hours of hard work, and it was meant to honor something they all praised. Larian Studios struck gold with this game, and the modding community is pulling its weight to spread the word and let other players know about Baldur’s Gate 3:

It’s really cool, right? It’s passion, it’s word-of-mouth, from a marketing point of view, and if it’s good, it’s a contribution to the entire game’s ecosystem.

Vincke is well aware that IP laws are murky water and the modding community is subject to legal issues, but he always views it as a method to prolong a game’s lifespan. Games benefited from mods, and some have stayed relevant for years. Perhaps Baldur’s Gate 3 will reap the same benefits, and Larian Studios could establish a lasting impact if this game is featured in others.

Modding has come a long way, and Swen Vincke isn’t shying away from supporting this act. Vincke being vocal is a sign that he values the creativity of modders and sees it as an opportunity for equal growth for modders’ talent and to promote Baldur’s Gate 3 over the years.
