Split Fiction – How to Beat Mr Hammer

Struggling with Split Fiction? Your partner letting you down? Well whether it’s during gameplay or a boss, we have absolutely all the answers you could possibly need. This guide will be your Split Fiction walkthrough for Mr Hammer, and more accurately, how to beat Mr Hammer.

How to Defeat Mr Hammer

Mr Hammer is the first proper boss of the game (and potentially a reference to a certain Batman: Arkham City villain), and introduces you to the real co-operative mechanics of the game. You and your partner have zero choice now; you have to be on the same wavelength throughout this chaotic and hectic boss fight, otherwise you’ll end up smushed on the floor by Mr Hammer and his gigantic hammer more times than you can count. Thankfully though, he’s not a difficult boss once you understand what you have to do over the three phases.

Phase One

Split Fiction likes to throw multiphase boss fights at us, and Mr Hammer is no different. The first phase is an immediate threat right after the short cut scene begins, as Mr Hammer will launch himself into the air and throw a seemingly unending amount of blue orbs at Mio and Zoe. Dodge these long enough, and eventually he will throw his hammer at one of you.

At this point, Mio needs to grapple attack towards the hammer. Slash quickly and damage the hammer enough, and then Zoe will be able to pick it up with her own powers. Throw it at Mr Hammer! Now you’ll see him fall from the sky, and just like you did his hammer, get in there and attack him. Do this right, and you’ll have beaten Mr Hammer’s first phase.

Phase Two

Phase Two of Mr Hammer’s boss fight begins much the same as the first phase, and has similar attack patterns, albeit with some extra special moves thrown in for good measure. Mr Hammer will regularly drop to the floor, and spin around in circles with his hammer. He’ll then return to the air if he doesn’t hit you within three attempts, and then throw his hammer down, allowing you and your partner to repeat the Phase One hammer attacks and telekinesis throws above.

Once you’ve damaged him enough, he’ll unleash a robotic hell on you, in the form of a battalion of robotic dogs. Using Mio, slash your way through them quickly, or if you’re Zoe, throw them using your telekinesis. Don’t take too long, otherwise they’ll jump on you and force you to button mash for survival. Once you’ve decimated the crowd of robot dogs, the final phase of the Mr Hammer boss fight will begin.

Phase Three

You’ll quickly see that Split Fiction is never short of spectacle, and Phase Three of Mr Hammer is no different. He’ll be sweeping across the floor with wild abandon now, slashing at you with his massive hammer. Dodge, jump and dash your way to safety once more!

Follow the same routine as before with the grapple attacks and telekinesis throws, and Mr Hammer will quickly resort to last defense ‘Thunderstruck’. As you can imagine, with the attack living up to its name, it ends up being these huge lightning bolts that trace across the floor towards and around you and your partner. Avoid these, and you’re almost there.

After you avoid the Thunderstruck attack, Mr Hammer will throw the hammer a final time, and you’ve guessed it, you’ll need to follow the original routine of attacking the hammer and throwing it at him, and in doing so, you’ll have beaten the first boss of Split Fiction.
