Ducky OK-M Review (Keyboard)

If you went back 20 years, keyboards weren’t quite as important as they are today. Whether it’s the day-to-day grind, or playing the latest shooter where every second counts, it’s never been more important to get yourself a keyboard that fits all of your needs. After spending several months with it, in multiple countries, and for several uses (including writing this review as we speak), I have the answer to just how good the Ducky OK-M really is. From typing feel to value, there’s a lot of questions to answer.

Ducky, as a keyboard manufacturer, have been at the forefront of making good keyboards for a few years at this point. And that certainly extends here. First, and in my opinion, the most important part of any good keyboard, is how it feels when typing. A mechanical keyboard lover, I’m a little contrarian when it comes to the amount of noise they can put out. Too loud can be frustrating, too little, there’s not enough audio feedback.

A mixture of the hard-wearing materials used, the keyboard actuators inside, and the low resistance needed means nothing short of a truly responsive and satisfying time, and with a touted 50 million keypresses, a long time to boot. That extends to normal day to day moments like this review, or the more hectic moments in an online FPS. Unfortunately for my skills, I couldn’t blame the keyboard’s responsiveness as a reason for my latest death, and that’s meant as a huge compliment here.

As well as being multi-useful, it’s also a dream to switch between different outputs, thanks to the Tri-Mode connectivity. With it having Bluetooth, Wireless and Wired capabilities (all of which are simple to swap between, at the push of a button on the back), I could flick between the Bluetooth connectivity to my keyboard-less tablet, to the Wifi connection of my laptop, or plug in if I wanted to jump across to the desktop. This example might sound convoluted and unlikely, but as someone who sits at a desk flicking between different devices, applications and needs at a moment’s notice, this was something of a lifesaver. I can honestly say this was the biggest and best part of the Ducky OK-M, at least from my point of view.

The Ducky OK-M has a lot of ‘standard’ features you’d expect these days. A multimedia volume knob, key dampening RGB lighting (which includes the sides) that adds to the simple and striking design, and hot swappable switches, meaning customisation is as simple as using a key extractor and putting in your new keys with a push. It may be becoming a standard feature, but the satisfaction from taking an already pretty keyboard and making it truly yours never gets boring, something Ducky seems to have incorporated into their designs for years now.

Less standard though, and very useful to anyone with a deeper understanding, is the keyboard’s VIA Support, which in layman’s terms, will allow you to reprogram more or less anything on the keyboard. Place macros to a specific button? Easy, just use the web-based interface. Now, this is a feature for the keyboard aficionados, but you really can do almost anything here. Within a few days of having it, I had my macros mapped across the keyboard, from simple bits like opening up Spotify, to more complicated ones based in gaming, or editing videos etc.

The only constraint here is your capabilities, and your ideas. These days, a keyboard not having macro mapping is a deal breaker for me, and for the relatively cheap price, it would have been understandable if the Ducky OK-M didn’t have it, but I’m glad to say otherwise.

For all of the good, there is a slight negative, and it’s one that’s not as relevant as it is in other tech – the battery life. It’s a smaller keyboard, and a ‘budget’ one at that, so it’s easy to forgive here, but after a few weeks, of daily use, the red battery light would start flashing, and it’d need a charge. Now, a keyboard with a battery life on the lower end is already less of an issue than other tech, but it is something to keep in mind.

It’s also surprisingly weighty considering it’s size. With the multiple layers inside the case, it soon adds up, and having taken it to Gamescom to use for my coverage there last week, it was especially noticeable lugging it around all day. The almost full size 98 isn’t marketed as an especially portable keyboard, and now I can see why.

However, all three variants are marketed as a cheaper alternative to others on the market, and as far as value, and bang for your buck goes, the Ducky OK-M keyboard may be one of the best on the market. It’s versatile, hard-wearing, satisfying to use, and thanks to some of its more premium components and features, feels like you’ve got a keyboard far outweighing its price point.
