DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations was revealed at Summer Game Fest, and with the trailer including some seriously surprising moments (modern day Slayer anyone?), speculation has been running rife on the internet. After spending an hour with Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin in a behind-closed-doors preview of the DLC, one particularly piece of speculation can now be put to bed. The classic levels, whilst based on the originals, aren’t exactly the same, and have been modernised, in graphical terms, unlike the Classic Levels appearance in DOOM 2016.
Marty Stratton, seemingly eager to squash any potential disappointment, said:
“It’s a little different than the ones we did in 2016, where you pulled the lever and got into the classic levels. Those were more like the original pixel art, you’d kind of feel like you were going into the past. These are modern graphics… modern interpretations of those textures.”
Waiting a beat, he continued:
“It’s this kind of cool in-between, between ya know the Classic Level and that art, and modern rendering and modern texturing materials.”
I don’t think this is going to shock anyone, after what was seen in the reveal trailer, but Stratton being so open and honest is refreshing, and should certainly stave off any disappointment some players may have felt if they’d gone in blind. It almost sounds as if this is a small, modern remaster of those original experiences. However, in somewhat of a throwaway comment at the time, Hugo Martin did mention that “I don’t think we have any DOOM 1 in there, it’s mostly DOOM 2”, so if you’re an OG lover only, don’t expect your favourite level to appear.
