God of War is the latest PlayStation Studios franchise to receive the live-action treatment from Amazon Prime Video. Despite recent setbacks like starting over from scratch, the producers are convinced the show will be a hit and ordered the new showrunner, Ronald D. Moore, to take the helm and oversee this project. Moore has had plenty of experience in this medium; however, the production team may have encountered another problem.
The Showrunner Behind the Live-Action God of War Series Is Not a Gamer

Moore was invited as a guest on Katee Sackhoff’s podcast where the two discussed Moore’s previous works and upcoming projects. During the episode, Moore revealed that Amazon has already greenlit two seasons of God of War. This is a high-profile franchise and the producers realize they only have one shot to make this right, and Moore’s impressive resume likely landed him the job as showrunner. Moore also revealed he was a gamer in his youth, but didn’t go through the source material for some reason.
Around the 1:17:27 timestamp, Moore discussed his new project and was intimidated by the sheer scope and scale of adapting a beloved gaming franchise into a television show.
Right now, I’m working on the adaptation of this video game called God of War that Amazon has ordered two seasons of, and they asked me to come in. I’m literally in the writer’s room, and that’s my new thing.
Gaming nowadays is extremely different than how it was back in the day. Moore also revealed that he tried to play through the more recent God of War games, but couldn’t get a hold of the modern control scheme.
The controllers now…Press R1; which one’s R1? Oh, I’m dead! I can’t quite get a hold of that.
Despite being unable to play through the game, Moore’s effort to at least try is commendable. This may cause doubt and suspicion about his ability to adapt Kratos’s story onto the small screen, but that shouldn’t be an issue since this is a different medium.
The God of War TV Show Is in Capable Hands
Hardcore fans of the video game series should realize that just because a showrunner has not finished the source material it automatically means the project is doomed. Moore has had years of experience under his belt, and with the support of Sony Television and Amazon Prime Video, this project has a fair shot of being a great adaptation like HBO’s The Last of Us.

Sony Interactive Entertainment is protective of its first-party franchises and recent live-action projects have been praised and universally received. Perhaps Santa Monica Studio will be closely involved in this new iteration and give Kratos the live-action series he deserves.
Moore’s expertise in this medium could benefit the franchise by telling new stories that the games couldn’t. God of War has been around for years and this new TV show is an opportunity to expand the lore while introducing it to a new audience and catering to the loyal fanbase.
