Story
The name Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 bears the biggest clue to the game’s narrative. In French, “Clair Obscur” refers to a technique used by painters to create depth and dramatic effects on their canvas. However, the Belle Epoque-inspired world of Lumiere featured in the game is beset by a mysterious entity only known as The Paintress, whose canvas paints a very grim picture for its denizens.

Every year, The Paintress paints a number on a monolith, thereby eliminating any human being whose age matches that number. The stakes are high for Lumiere’s populace from the get-go, and they attempt to prevent their extinction by sending expeditions of trained warriors to The Paintress’ abode to try and stop her.
Expedition 33 is one such attempt to remove The Paintress’ malignant influence, and is brought to life by an ensemble cast who brave a visually stunning yet dangerous landscape in their efforts to save their fellow compatriots and Lumiere. Following in the footsteps of previous expeditions, your party encounters a variety of characters, both friend and foe, as their journey towards an inevitable showdown with The Paintress unfolds.
Multiplayer
Unfortunately, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will not have a multiplayer mode and is designed to be a single-player experience from start to finish. While that could be a disappointment to some, the game packs enough of a punch to be enjoyed playing solo on account of some excellent gameplay mechanics.
Gameplay
Sandfall Interactive has pulled out all the stops to make Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 a game for the ages. While it seems like a textbook JRPG on first glance, taking on the various enemies peppered throughout The Paintress’ domain presents you with innovative twists on the genre’s trappings.

For instance, an interesting change to the traditional turn-based formula allows you to dodge, block, or parry enemy attacks as they happen. Doing so allows you to turn the tables on your opponents while also netting some extra XP to spend on unlocking more skills for your characters. However, early previews suggest that parrying enemy attacks may not be as easy as in other titles, adding a layer of risk and reward to the core gameplay loop.
Furthermore, your own attacks come with quick-time events that allow you to deal some extra damage if you are quick enough to succeed at them. With each character in your party bringing a unique skill set to the table, Clair Obscur is a game that can be easy to learn but difficult to master. Moreover, each character’s skill set is in line with their backstories, making this a game that blends its narrative and gameplay together with style.
