Did Craig Mazin Just Reveal The Last of Us Part 3?

The Last of Us Part 3 is arguably on the top of the gaming community’s wishlist, especially after how the controversial sequel ended a few years ago. Sequels are inevitable for high-profile franchises, and the game developers could be biding their time focusing on other projects while gearing up for a new story.

The hopes for a sequel are still high, and it is worth mentioning that the live-action adaptation relies on established story content and the showrunners are not actively deviating from the source material.

The Last of Us Part 3 Could Be What the Fourth Season Be About

The Last of Us Season 2 will cover parts of the sequel, but the showrunners divided it into multiple seasons. It would make sense since the ambitious scale of Part 2 is too much to cover within one season, and it is safe to assume that the show could last for a few more seasons before they run out of material. The story could be split into two or three seasons, fans wonder what the fourth season will be about.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin elaborated on how the source material acts as a guideline for the live-action adaptation and his firm decision to stay within the lanes.

I am not going to go past the game. I’ll just say that flat out. So if people are thinking, “Oh, these guys are planning the old cash grab thing—

Once Mazin wrapped up the story of Part 2 in seasons two and three, this could be it for the live-action show until Naughty Dog released Part 3. Perhaps the HBO team will take a break and wait for Neil Druckmann to wrap up Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet then power through The Last of Us Part 3.

Suppose Mazin really doesn’t want to go past the ending of the second game and stick to the source material. In that case, he may have to wait a while, as Neil Druckmann has put a dampener on the chances of The Last of Us Part 3, so he’ll either have to go back on his words, persuade Druckmann to get on with it, or perhaps he’s let slip more than he should have said?
