Doom: The Dark Ages New Glory Kill System Could Be Divisive to Franchise Die-Hards: “Little scary to pull away from the synced glory kill system”

We recently received a brand-new gameplay trailer for Doom: The Dark Ages during the recent Xbox Developer_Direct, and it showcased plenty of interesting gameplay mechanics that will be coming to the next installment in the franchise.

One of these gameplay mechanics that the recent Doom games have been using is the glory kill system, which has been incredibly popular with the fanbase. However, this fan-favorite mechanic seems to be changing, which could be for better or for worse.

During the recent gameplay trailer, we caught a glimpse of the new glory kill system that will be active within Doom: The Dark Ages. This new physics-based glory kill system allows the player to perform glory kills from any angle rather than set positions while also removing animation locks.

The reason this decision was made was revealed during a Q&A session, according to Marty Stratton, the executive producer of Doom: The Dark Ages, is because it “Helps the issue of addressing repetition” as it reduces the number of times a player will see the same glory kill, with less of the same animation.

Those who have played Doom 2016 and Doom: Eternal will understand how repeating the same glory kills can take the fun out of the game, as doing a glory kill for the 100th time isn’t as fun as it was the first time. Now Doom: The Dark Ages players will be able to have a different experience each time they attempt a glory kill against their enemies, as they are no longer tied to getting into a certain position and being animation-locked. As Stratton went on to say:

“Little scary to pull away from the synced glory kill system”

However, as much as this is a new and inventive way to avoid repetition within a game like Doom: The Dark Ages, there is the potential that the fanbase will not be happy with this decision. This is simply because the recent Doom games have utilized glory kills in a way that provides a power fantasy for the player, making them feel like the Doom Slayer is actually ripping through the demons he is facing.

But now with the new glory kill system, fans may not be too happy as it removes this power fantasy slightly in exchange for a quick animation that doesn’t provide the same effect as the original system, which gets you up close and personal.

For now, though only time will tell whether or not the Doom fanbase will like or dislike this new system, with this version of Doom being one of the biggest id Software has done, it is understandable why it would like to avoid the boring repetition of glory kills against the same enemies over and over again.
