Even though Doom is a massive franchise with incredibly large and fun games, id Software has gone all out for the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages, as it is touted to have a “Largest play space ever in a DOOM game” according to Hugo Martin, the game’s director, during a behind-closed-doors Q&A session on Tuesday.

This means that players will be able to explore to their heart’s content as this installment of Doom returns to a more linear pathway in terms of the story rather than following Doom: Eternal‘s pathway of using a hub to activate missions.

Along with being able to explore what they want, players will be able to control how the game plays out to a certain degree, as Hugo Martin also described it “You control the pace of the game. Where you go, who you fight, and the objectives you pursue. It’s a Doom sandbox full of war and riches.”.

With numerous different biomes for the player to explore and numerous puzzle rooms that they can discover and solve in an attempt to improve your character by finding all sorts of upgrades and gold that can be used to strengthen the Doom Slayer even more.

Even though Doom 2016 and Doom: Eternal had very large worlds that the player could explore, it looks like Doom: The Dark Ages is blowing them out of the water with massive battle arenas and more exploration than ever before, not to mention huge hordes of enemies to fight and dominate.

This also means that the player will also be able to take advantage of the new traversal equipment that Doom: The Dark Ages is introducing into the game such as the shield bash, which allows the player to shorten the distance between them and their enemies. As well as a shield-like grapple that allows the player to throw their shield at certain locations and pull the Doom Slayer towards them, essentially launching the Slayer in the air.

Each of these traversal systems will be instrumental in playing through Doom: The Dark Ages and there are plenty of activities for the player to discover and conquer as they make their way through the large and magnificent locations id Software has brought to this new game.
