In the first place, Doom: The Dark Ages making its way to PS5 shouldn’t be the biggest shock with the previous installments ending up on the platform, but with Microsoft owning the IP, it still caused some waves when it was announced last year.
What some fans wondered was if the release would be similar to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, with the game remaining a timed Xbox Exclusive at the end of 2024, before making its way over to PlayStation in early 2025.
Doom: The Dark Ages Defies Expectations
After the Xbox Developer_ Direct, it’s clear that Xbox and id Software are taking another strategy with Doom: The Dark Ages, and instead of staggering the release, they’re in fact releasing it on all platforms on the same day, which should prove to be a popular decision amongst gamers. No spoilers for those with the ‘wrong’ console, this time around.
Undoubtedly, this will also result in a stronger initial sales performance, something Microsoft and Xbox specifically need, after a string of failures throughout 2024 and recent years, a strong 2025 is paramount to to its success.

It’s also interesting to note the potential differences between Doom: The Dark Ages dev id Software and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s MachineGames, as a simultaneous release date for the former points to the fact that the developers had more time and warning, compared to lesser time and perhaps a hastier decision for Indy’s latest adventure – but that’s conjecture at this point.
One thing is for certain though, Doom: The Dark Ages could change the franchise completely, and judging by the wealth of information we now know about the game, everyone will be counting down the days until it drops. From new gameplay details, new weapons, and an entirely different gameplay loop, be it Xbox, PS5, or PC you play it on, Doom: The Dark Ages will never be the same.
Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15th, 2025, on PS5, Xbox, and PC.
