Phantom Blade Zero was released just about a week ago, but a lot of players have seen through Soul’s 66-day journey already. Now, just like you being here, players are looking for games like Phantom Blade Zero to fill the gap Soul left. He was off on a journey to lift a curtain from a conspiracy against him as he swings his sword through enemy hearts and blocks when they try to do the same. Gamers are hoping to see it wear the Game of the Year crown already.

And so if you haven’t played it for some reason yet, or if you can’t get over the game after finishing it, there’s a few games like Phantom Blade Zero that’ll give you the same thrill and adrenaline rush.

9. Dark Souls

Dark Souls lets you play as an unknown character who explores Lordran, the game’s fictional setting. There is a wide selection of ranged and melee weapons to swing at the enemies. Apart from that, you can use magic to cast spells to your advantage. The world, though, will feel different than Phantom Blade Zero. A closed, decaying kingdom, rather than an open forest. You will be exploring dungeons mostly, but when you get outside, it’s always cloudy up there.

  • Release Date: September 22nd, 2011.
  • Platforms:PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.

8. Elden Ring

FromSoftware wanted another game like Dark Souls with an open world. So the studio came up with Elden Ring. You again play as an unnamed character, usually referred to as Tarnished, wandering and living the story in the Lands Between. Like Dark Souls games, you will also find bosses whom you will remember for their brutality as you fight with swords and magical spells.

The Lands Between has open areas like Limgrave that feel like a breath of fresh air. That is until you explore ruins and underground. But they too are enchanting in their own way. Alternatively to Elden Ring, you have Elden Ring Nightreign, which we loved.

  • Release Date: February 25th, 2022.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

7. God of War (2018)

Among the games like Phantom Blade Zero here, God of War is the only one where you control a god. Despite it not being an open-world game, the areas are so vast that it almost feels like an open-world game.

You control Kratos, the iconic character from the Santa Monica Studio’s series, who is now living with his son Atreus. Kratos fights with a magical battle axe called the Leviathan Axe, which he can also throw at enemies to deal damage. You will also find magical bosses and a giant snake that talks in a holy language. Atreus can understand it.

  • Release Date: April 20th, 2018.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

6. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Wolf walks amid a beautiful scenery of trees laden with red flowers

Sekiro packs the scenic environments and a fluid combat system like Ghost of Tsushima but less cinematic. It is also the third FromSoftware game in the list and the first that features a dedicated protagonist, Wolf. Although you have to fight the enemies with your katana in a usual way, giving them multiple hits, you can give them a single killing blow if the timing is right.

  • Release Date: March 22, 2019.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

5. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

If Phantom Blade Zero had a female protagonist and a plague spreading through a country, you will get Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. You control Bai Wuchang, a female pirate, who fights her way through an event called Feathering.

She wields a large sword as a weapon to fend off supernatural and infected enemies, but there are also magical abilities involved if Bai manages to stay on foot and keeps fighting them. A feature that encourages you to stay active by keeping magic as a bait. We reviewed Wuchang Fallen Feathers and absolutely adored it.

  • Release Date: July 24th, 2025.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

4. Ghost of Tsushima

Unlike the FromSoftware games above in the list, you control a definitive hero named Jin Sakai. It’s pure cinema when you play it, the samurai fighting styles, and the scenery. The scenery especially will make you feel the air, for wind is always blowing the wild grass. You have options to take the enemy’s head on or through stealth. Both the tactics feel true to art and show how much the Sucker Punch developers poured their attention into the game.

  • Release Date: July 17th, 2020.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.

3. Where Winds Meet

The wandered creates ripples in the water, while standing in the middle of water, to make the fishes jump out of the water - just one of the games like phantom blade zero
It’s a massive open world that you can’t explore in a day. Image Credits: NetEase Games

With Where Winds Meet, we are again back with an unnamed protagonist. You will find the gameplay similar to other mentioned games like Phantom Blade Zero here, but instead of a straightforward story, you are building your own. The protagonist is called the Wanderer. You are required to build this character as you progress. Learn the ancient mystic arts, get into the combat, or just go take a stroll and see the beautiful scenery. Just a way to live.

  • Release Date: November 14th, 2025.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Mobile (Android & iOS), and PC.

2. Black Myth: Wukong

Sun Wukong stands on a rock and stares at a massive god - just one of the games like phantom blade zero
It’s sad that it didn’t become the ultimate Game of the Year, losing to Astro Bot. Image Credits: Game Science

Arguably one of the closest games like Phantom Blade Zero, in terms of a Soulslike that isn’t a Soulslike. In Black Myth: Wukong, you play as a monkey, called the Destined One, on a quest to recover six relics of the legendary Sun Wukong. The game is inspired by one of the greatest Chinese novels, Journey to the West. You have a staff with you as a weapon but a range of abilities to beat the hell out of enemies.

The best part of combat is the ability to acquire spirits and transform into one of the mini bosses you defeated. You might fall in love with the head butt of the Wandering Wight spirit. He’s like Buddha with a massive head, who doesn’t want to be disturbed.

  • Release Date: August 20th, 2024.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC.

1. Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Musashi's sword and a creature who is fighting him, his sword, both clashes and creates sparks as they fight in the middle of a small water stream - just one of the games like phantom blade zero
Capcom wanted to revive the franchise for a long long time. Image Credits: Capcom

We’ve got another wanderer in the list. In Onimusha: Way of the Sword, he has a name, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi is forced through hell and back in the game’s story. Needs to defeat some unholy forces now roaming the earth. You will find him fighting disgusting creatures, whose sight becomes more disgusting when he dismembers them through attacks.

Its combat system is worth scrutiny though, as timing matters in duels. You must observe the opponent to give a proper hit. For a list of important tips you’ll need if you do play it, check out our tips here.

  • Release Date: September 4th, 2026.
