‘Happily Retired’ Chris Evans Refutes Avengers: Doomsday Return, But Seemingly has Forgot Recent MCU Events

Taking into account that Robert Downey Jr., after having completely retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), will return to participate as one of the greatest villains, many fans believe that Chris Evans would do the same for this cinematic universe. This seemed all but confirmed when leaks of his imminent return occurred, and nothing was said for weeks on end.

However, in a recent interview, he clarified that he has “happily retired” from all aspects of superherodom. Everything seems to indicate that his character will not return to the universe, but there is always the nagging doubt since actors like Andrew Garfield have said the same, only to then end up appearing anyway.

Chris Evans Follows the Example of What the MCU Should Do – Look Forward

In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Evans responded to the question in a very friendly manner, but even so, he seemed frustrated. This is because he himself clarified that he would not return, yet he keeps being asked the same question repeatedly over the years.

To all this, the actor who once portrayed the stoic Captain America and, at one point, the Human Torch, better known as Johnny Storm, makes it more than clear that he will not return to the MCU again.

“This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!”

Or at least not in the way everyone expects, with long multi-film contracts, as has been done in the past. Rather, in the form of cameos or short appearances as he did in the recent Deadpool & Wolverine, at a time he was adamant he was still “happily retired” from the MCU. He’s not above misleading or lying to bring fans something they desperately want.

According to the current Captain America himself, Anthony Mackie, he also thought Evans would return at some point. The star of Captain America: Brave World Order said that he spoke with his manager and that it seems like for Avengers: Doomsday, they were planning to bring everyone back, including Evans. Considering the source material available and the lead into Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s not a huge surprise.

In recent years, the MCU, after the extremely successful Avengers: Endgame, has failed to maintain the quality fans were expecting, with many projects ending in disappointment for many. This has translated into criticism tearing apart new projects and theaters not filling up as they used to. However, some projects related to nostalgia, like Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home, were very successful, but it is a formula that will not always work.

Rather than rehashing old ideas and old characters – the return of Robert Downey Jr. being a prime example -, perhaps a step back is needed for the MCU, and Avengers: Secret Wars could prove to be exactly that, for those who know what occurs. Either way, as it stands, we’re not sure anyone believes Chris Evans this time around. Captain Hydra anyone?
