If, like us, you enjoyed the first season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry but are unfamiliar with the games’ lore, the cliffhanger that it ended on could be a tad confusing. There’s a lot to unpack after Dante’s latest adventures ended with a rather unfortunate twist for the wise-cracking demon hunter. That’s where we come in.

Be aware that this article dives deep into the season’s ending. You may want to come back after you have watched the final episode of Devil May Cry. |
The Party’s Just Getting Started in Devil May Cry
Although Dante was able to thwart Mr. Rabbit’s plans to merge the human world with Makai, thereby bringing about the end of human civilization, things don’t exactly end as planned for him. Despite Lady begrudgingly acknowledging his ability to keep his demonic side in check, her loyalties still lie with Darkcom, the organization that trained her to become a badass demon hunter in her own right.
She decides to knock Dante out, turning him in to the shady organization run by Barnes, the Vice President of the United States, who decides to use Rabbit’s portal-creating device to launch a full-scale invasion of the Demon World, starting a holy war that sees multitudes of demon refugees being imprisoned on an unprecedented scale.

However, Adi Shankar’s take on Devil May Cry‘s lore brings a ray of hope for the demons in the form of Vergil, Dante’s long-lost twin brother who is revealed to be a servant of Mundus, the Demon King. While this may sound familiar to anyone who has played the games, the show’s handling of Vergil is among its highlights. He is vaguely alluded to at multiple points before appearing as Nelo Angelo, a form given to him by Mundus, in the season’s penultimate episode.
Rabbit’s plan involves reassembling Sparda’s amulet and exposing it to the awakened form of Sparda’s DNA obtained from both of his sons. As Nelo Angelo, Vergil remains in Makai, leading Dante to believe that he was killed in the attack on his childhood home along with Eve, their mother. While we are privy to the information that he is still alive, Dante isn’t as lucky until Rabbit reveals his fate to him as they face off in the finale.
What’s Next for the Sons of Sparda?
In response to Darkcom’s hostile actions toward Makai, we soon see Vergil come to the rescue of some imprisoned demons as Nelo Angelo. However, fans of Dante’s other half in the games are sure to have spotted a very familiar series of precise cuts and slashes from none other than Yamato, the katana that Sparda entrusted to Vergil.
Vergil’s demonic form quickly vanishes, showcasing his trademark blue coat and Yamato at his hip as he promises his demonic kin that a storm is coming to the human world, the likes of which it has never seen before.
Meanwhile, Dante remains in the custody of Darkcom, safely sealed away alongside his amulet and the Sword of Sparda. The next season likely sets things up in a way that sees Darkcom enlist his help against his brother, using Lady as a bargaining chip. Barnes’ disdain toward her could lead to some interesting developments as Lady is likely to see how dogmatic and corrupt the organization truly is and perhaps experience the cruelty they are capable of first-hand.

Vergil’s presence in the human realm is also sure to throw Dante off his game, as he had already resolved to search for his brother in the aftermath of Rabbit’s defeat. Although the two brothers seemed to have a lot of rivalry as children, just as it was in the games, it could very well be that they form an uneasy alliance on the show.
It’s also likely that Vergil could be the main antagonist of season two, showcasing his penchant to remain cool, calm, and utterly diabolical as a striking contrast to Dante’s brash and reactive personality. If Vergil’s anything like his video game counterpart, he is likely to be disdainful toward Dante, seeing him as weak for being sympathetic to humans while ignoring the needs of his own kin.
There are so many possible routes for Shankar and Mir Studios to take in a new season of Devil May Cry, which is a distinct possibility considering the positive response it is receiving from critics and audiences alike. We can’t wait to see what twists that would bring to the table and if Dante and Vergil are able to find common ground once they finally meet.
