Oblivion Remastered Reminds Us of Patrick Stewart’s Wholesome OG Oblivion Reaction

Shadow-dropping out of nowhere, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has made fans of the original incredibly happy, with remastered visuals, updated mechanics, and some of the same memorable ‘jank’ that made the original so much fun. However, did you know Patrick Stewart was involved in the original, and therefore is present in Oblivion Remastered? That sultry, silky voice of Uriel Septim VII in the opening minutes was none other than Jean Luc Picard himself, Patrick Stewart.

An actor steeped in the history of his craft, with appearances in big Hollywood blockbusters, long-standing TV series, and of course his first love, theatre and the stage, Patrick Stewart has famously been one for being as prepared as possible for his characters. However, when originally recording his lines for Oblivion, he may not have been expecting the level of preparation he received.

With Uriel Septim VII dying in the opening minutes of Oblivion Remastered, it wouldn’t have been a surprise if he hadn’t prepared or wanted to prepare much for the video game role, but the opposite ended up being true. During the making-of-doc about the original Oblivion, Bethesda head Todd Howard mentioned a document handed to Stewart before he began his performance:

“Ken [Rolston] had written a bunch of notes for Patrick Stewart on the character—very, very long, referencing things Stewart had done before. I thought it was embarrassingly long, actually.”

It later came out that this document ended up being 90 pages, which many would consider an insane book of character background for any character, let alone one that dies early on. It turns out, reportedly, that Patrick Stewart LOVED this and said he wished others would be as prepared for his various characters throughout his work.

With Oblivion Remastered releasing, Virtuous did confirm that many of the actors returned to their roles to rerecord and add new dialogue, but we’re not sure if Patrick Stewart was included in those who returned. It won’t be his most remembered role, but his reaction to what many would consider overkill proves his care and attitude to even the ‘smallest’ of his roles.
