Split Fiction – How to Beat the Overseer

Struggling with Split Fiction? Your partner letting you down? Well, whether it’s during gameplay or a boss, we have absolutely all the answers you could possibly need. This guide will be your Split Fiction walkthrough for the seventh boss of the game, the Overseer, and more accurately, how to beat the Overseer.

How to Defeat the Overseer

The Overseer is the seventh boss player to encounter in Split Fiction, and they are unlikely to forget their encounter against this towering mech anytime soon thanks to a few unique twists that Hazelight Studios introduces to its excellent gameplay loop.

After an excellent platforming section that requires Mio and Zoe to work together to reach a portal, making good use of the armor and Shield Busters that they receive earlier in the game’s fourth chapter, the two heroines come across the Overseer, a mechanical turtle that seems hellbent on ending their adventure with clinical efficiency.

However, Mio and Zoe have other plans, taking it on in a multi-phase battle that could certainly make for a riveting story.

Phase One

The boss battle starts off with the Overseer staring down at Mio and Zeo from above, relying on three main attacks in its attempts to bring an abrupt end to their adventure.

  • A ball of acid that bursts on contact, requiring a well-timed dodge to avoid a lot of damage.
  • A mobile, spike-covered egg that bounces off the arena’s walls while causing a lot of damage to players unfortunate enough to come into contact with it. Simply jump over it with the right timing while shooting at it to take it out of the picture.
  • Finally, the Overseer launches two drones that are shielded against damage, requiring shots from the right player to expose them before they can be shot down permanently.

It’s important to remember that the Overseer is invulnerable to any damage when the egg or drones are in play. We highly recommend focusing your attention on either one whenever the Overseer launches them at Mio and Zoe, and quickly going back to attacking the Overseer as soon as you are able to destroy them.

Phase Two

When you manage to bring it down to about two-thirds of its health, the Overseer begins to flood the arena’s floor with acid, forcing Mio and Zoe to use newly spawned portals in order to get to the higher ground while clearing up color-coded boxes that block their rise. The boss cannot be damaged during this time, making getting to the top a priority.

At the top, the camera shifts to the Overseer’s point of view in an interesting twist that makes this fight very memorable. Through its eyes, players must focus on destroying explosives that the Overseer launches at them. These shielded bombs are a potent weapon for both the player and the boss. Shoot them to trigger a prompt that allows you to throw them right back at the boss.

Things are made complicated by the addition of vertical lasers that chase Mio and Zoe around the arena, requiring one of them to take them out while the other keeps their focus trained on returning the Overseer’s bombs. Whittling down the boss’ health bar to about half triggers the next phase of the fight.

Phase Three

This phase involves a thrilling chase down a narrow corridor with the Overseer doing its best to catch up to Mio and Zoe, launching a multitude of attacks to try and slow them down. These include the color-coded explosives from Phase Two that produce walls of flame and can be shot in order to neutralize them.

Just like other portions of the fight, it’s a good idea for one player to deal with the explosives while another shoots at the Overseer in order to whittle away at its massive health bar consistently. Reaching the end of the corridor triggers another change in the camera’s perspective, along with new attacks for Mio and Zoe to watch out for.

There are laser beams and rolling debris to avoid as the Overseer makes its final stand against our two heroines. Additionally, it slams the ground to create rings of fire that must be jumped over lest they cause problems. Eventually, red and blue gears appear on the door behind the Overseer which can be shot in order to force it back while it desperately tries to hold the door with its arms.

Its attacks stay more or less the same, however, and keeping up the pressure eventually leads to the Overseer being ended once and for all and the path to the chapter’s next level opens up for Mio and Zoe.
