Rebel Wolves’ The Blood of Dawnwalker is shaping up to be a gift that keeps on giving. New details about its protagonist showcase a title that takes the best of its inspirations in an ambitious new direction with its players being the ones who benefit the most.
The upcoming vampire-based action-adventure title seems all set to let its players unleash their inner Astarion, its protagonist being a unique human-vampire hybrid whose activities in the stunning new open-world are influenced by the game’s day and night cycles.
The Blood of Dawnwalker’s Nuanced New Mechanics

Building on the ‘time as a resource mechanic’ that has already been discussed at length, director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz revealed to PCGamer that Coen, The Blood of Dawnwalker’s protagonist, will have to navigate the game’s world with or without his vampiric powers based on whether it is day or night when he is out and about in Vale Sangora, the game’s world based on medieval Europe.
“It’s somehow interesting, this duality of the hero, which we know from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for example. It’s something in pop culture that is well-known and wasn’t yet explored in games. It gives you a different layer to those no-realities, and I think it would be quite interesting because nobody yet has done that. And we will see how people will like it.”
With the gaming world yet to experience a fully-fledged vampire game, this new mechanic could be an excellent way to ensure that Coen simply doesn’t vaporize when he steps out into the sun while allowing players to feel like a true vampire once the night settles in. It’s a perfect balance between Coen’s two sides that is sure to stretch beyond The Blood of Dawnwalker’s gameplay and impact the game’s narrative as well.
The new mechanic comes with a lot of potential, essentially necessitating choices between day and night when exploring Vale Sangora depending on the kind of skills Coen will need to bring to the table. Throw in the limitation of him having only a fixed time frame in which he needs to achieve his mission and we have a title that is sure to push the boundaries of what open-world games can offer to their players.
While The Blood of Dawnwalker does not have a release date as yet, it is sure to be on many players’ wishlists considering its illustrious lineage, and there’s also a ridiculous amount we do know ahout the game already.

With a passion for gaming that is equaled only by his love for writing, Varun has either a controller, keyboard, or a guitar in his hands when he is not out exploring the middle of nowhere on a motorcycle. Soulslikes, RPGs, and action-adventure titles keep him awake at night and get him out of bed in the morning. He will never stop lamenting the lack of a Bloodborne sequel even as he spends another couple of hours exploring the Lands Between in Elden Ring.
