The Game Awards: Elden Ring Nightreign Finally Gives Soulsborne Players What They’ve Asked For

Elden Ring Nightreign is headed to PlayStation, Xbox, and PC sometime next year and the gaming community did not see this coming. During the 10th anniversary of The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley pulled some strings and made this year’s show worth the wait with incredible surprises from respected game developers and musical performances alike.

While players worldwide gathered to celebrate the wonders of video games, some game developers took the opportunity to use this event for world premieres of their latest titles. FromSoftware came in prepared with a new standalone game set within the world of Elden Ring where players can play with their friends to survive the harsh challenges and overpowered bosses together.

There is no denying that FromSoftware achieved something marvelous with the Soulsborne genre and Elden Ring was the crown jewel of the company, winning Game of the Year two years ago in 2022. FromSoftware President and Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki came out swinging by expanding the world with a lengthy expansion that rivaled the base game and was nominated for this year’s Game of the Year again in Shadow of the Erdtree.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the inclusion of the DLC, the quality speaks for itself and it is evident that the game developers are not done with this IP and intend to expand it with a new co-op standalone through Elden Ring Nightreign. The Soulsborne genre is not for the faint of heart, and this new collaborative experience could encourage Miyazaki’s vision of a player to endure amidst the challenging threats, this time with allies.

Whether fans are happy with the resulting announcement is up in the air though, as it seems to be a mixed bag so far:

Playing Devil’s Advocate, some fans posited the fact that it’d ‘Give the modders more fuel to make crazy stuff” and that “It’s not a replacement for the normal Souls gameplay”.

FromSoftware has nurtured a generation of competitive players with the Soulsborne genre and this new project could transform that urge for self-improvement to help other players. While details of the upcoming co-op title are vague, it is currently known that the world will use elements of Elden Ring, whilst also bringing new mechanics to the series, with it being a rogue-lite, set over a matter of three in-game days, and playable either solo or as a party of three.
