Call of Duty 2025 should be anything but Black Ops 7 for that matter, for it could equate to the same thing, another potential letdown just like Modern Warfare 3 was to many people. Some rumors suggest that the next game in the franchise is likely to be set after the events of Black Ops 2. If that’s true, Activision might be making a big mistake given what happened after their first back-to-back release in the franchise.
Activision released Modern Warfare 3 the very next year after Modern Warfare 2 came out. Next thing we know, it became an instant flop, critically speaking. Although it was a success from a commercial perspective, raking in $775 million in the first five days, fans were less enthused with it.
Activision Would Want to Slam on the Brakes on Black Ops Development

Black Ops is currently at a distance from falling into the same pit as Modern Warfare. Although Black Ops 6 met with mixed reviews, it is a better response than what’s the case with Modern Warfare 3. Activision would not want to go in the direction where the latter went. Though fans can say it is the weakest in the Black Ops bunch.
If they hurry in developing a follow-up in the franchise again, they may end up with an underdeveloped product like what happened in 2023. Currently, Black Ops 6 sits with a weighted average of 82 out of 100 in MetaCritic. The first game is still at the top of the franchise with an 87/100 score. Only Black Ops Declassified happens to have a 33/100 rating; however, that game was developed for PlayStation Vita.
Below, you will find all Call of Duty: Black Ops games available at the time of writing ranked as per their Metacritic scores.

Why Did Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Turn Out to Be Such a Bad Product?

The biggest letdown in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was its campaign, which was received poorly by fans and critics alike, especially owing to its introduction of open-combat missions that were criticized heavily.
Interestingly, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier mentioned in one of his reports that the game was meant to be a Modern Warfare 2 DLC, but Sledgehammer Games’ Aaron Halon outright denied it.

There’s no official word on what we are calling the next Call of Duty just yet, but Activision’s Rob Kostich says they have already planned the series through 2027. Some reports also suggest that Infinity Ward is helming the project, which naturally prompts the users to think that Modern Warfare 4 could be on the line.
