GTA 6 is scheduled to be released later this year, and a former developer’s experience might give fans an indication as to when they can expect a potential release date. The gaming community has been begging for updates or news about this highly anticipated project, but the game developers have been radio silent since releasing the first trailer.
While the excitement for the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto franchise is at an all-time high, some fans remembered to celebrate an incredible milestone. GTA 4 was released 17 years ago, and one of the developers recalled the important decision-making processes within the studio.
GTA 6 Could Repeat History

The gaming community has been begging for GTA 6 for the last few years, and all the developers have to show for it is a brief teaser trailer and a release window of 2025. There is no denying that a project of this scale takes time and resources, but some fans are at the end of their ropes and would appreciate it if Rockstar Games remembered to share updates and new details about the potential release date.
17 years ago, on April 29th 2008 we released Grand Theft Auto IV.

To focus on making the game truly next-gen, we dropped many game features from San Andreas.

Obbe Vermeij worked on GTA 4 and took to social media about how this project was a massive leap from previous installments. Game development can take a toll, especially for a franchise of this magnitude. Vermeij recalled when the studio ultimately decided to delay the game and miss the original release date. Perhaps GTA 6 will go through the same experience, and Vermeijj is optimistic that the studio will share news
The original release date was October 16th 2007, in time for Christmas. We made the decision to delay the game in July 2007. Only at that time did it become clear we were going to miss the deadline. I’m guessing decision-day for VI will be similar. Fingers crossed for Take2’s August earnings report.
Fans have been watching like hawks every time a new earnings call from Take-Two Interactive is scheduled, since this could be a good opportunity to share new information about upcoming games. Obbe Vermeij hypothesized that Rockstar Games could be repeating history, and the studio might make a big decision sometime soon.
Vermeij clarified he has no inside information about the GTA 6 release date. The possibility of being delayed shouldn’t be a shock, especially nowadays when most games are ambitious and technical marvels. GTA 4 was way ahead of its time, and the delay allowed the developers to make some adjustments and polish other aspects to give fans their money’s worth. Only time will tell before Rockstar Games gives fans a solid release date, and the Take-Two Interactive earnings call around August is a good date to share new details.
