Turok: Origins Allows You to Unleash The Beast While Fighting Robotic Dinosaurs With Your Friends

The Turok franchise has been around for quite a few years, with games being spread out throughout the late 90s and within the early 2000s, but they have sadly been MIA for some time now, but after many years of waiting, players are getting a new game in the form of Turok: Origins that brings players back into the Turok universe but with a change due to this game being a reboot, where we can see a whole new beginning, play with our friends in 3-person co-op and try out all new abilities and weapons as we fight various enemies.

Although I only played through one mission during my time with the game at Gamescom, I was able to try out one of the three different classes that players can choose within the game while also trying out some of the class-specific weapons that will be available as I fought through the “tutorial” level of the game and saw some of the enemies and even a boss that players will encounter within the game.

The first thing that I experienced within Turok: Origins was the ability to select a preset skin for my character, which was selected out of a large variety of options providing players with plenty of choices to suit what they are looking for, and then being able to select one of three different classes, which were a Cougar, Raven, or Bison, which each had their own abilities and even their own weapons.

During my time with the game, I chose the Raven class, which is a DPS-based class that can use a bow and arrow, a spore ability that sends out tracking spores toward enemies, a time-slowing bubble which can be very effective against big bosses, a small circle ability that buffs the damage of anyone standing within, and finally an ultimate ability that you can unlock which sends out a group of ravens from the player that tracks enemies and deals a large amount of damage.

Using these abilities in a form of combination can prove to be incredibly useful, especially if you are playing in co-op, as you can stack numerous abilities together to help boost your teammates’ efficiency in many ways. One way I made use of these abilities was to use my time-slowing bubble to slow a boss down in order to provide my teammates the opportunity to shoot the weak spot, and then I used my buff circle to boost everyone’s damage against said weak spot.

In terms of exploration, these abilities weren’t really as useful, as my teammates were often spread out and the enemies died too quickly for us to actually benefit from the buffs and slow-down effect, but I was able to use the spore ability to lower the HP of enemies so my teammates could run in for the kill.

Due to Turok: Origins being a reboot of the franchise, players will likely recognise a few enemies that will show up within the game, with many of them being simple dinosaurs that are suited with extra weapons and armour, but there are humanoid enemies as well that players will have to contend with.

Among these enemies I was also able to experience one of the bosses that Turok: Origins will employ against the player, with this boss being a T-rex which has numerous armaments at its disposal, and the boss fight was a real challenge not only because the T-rex was able to shoot rocket launches, but the only place we could deal damage to it was by shooting its eye once we broke its armour, which was a rather annoying challenge until I was able to freeze it in my time-slowing bubble.

When it comes to exploration, players will play through the game in mission-based levels that have a small amount of exploration within them, even with small secrets hidden within that can be found throughout the level. When you are playing in co-op, players need to work together to explore these levels, as progressing requires all the players to head to a certain location after completing an objective, but there is a timer that can be used to force players to move on if you get sick of waiting.

Sadly, we didn’t get to see too much of the game’s story, but what we did see was very interesting, with the developer mentioning that there will be around 10-12 hours of story gameplay for players to enjoy, but there will be options to replay the missions and try out new weapons, as there are over 250 weapons for players to use within the game.

At the time of writing, there isn’t an exact release date for Turok: Origins, but it is scheduled to release sometime within 2026.
