Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has been on the wishlist of every Plague Tale franchise fan since its original reveal. Three years we’ve waited for the continuance of Amicia’s story after the harrowing ending of the second game, A Plague Tale: Requiem, but we’ll have to wait a little longer, as Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a prequel set fifteen years prior to the events of the second game, and instead follows Sophia as she maneuvers her own perils involving the Macula.
Fans have been chatting about the post-credit scene, and what it means for the franchise, and Lead Writer confirmed the fan theory behind that moment, but during another chat post-Gamescom, she also admitted that there’s a huge emotional moment many fans will be missing. Full spoilers follow, so look away if you’ve yet to finish the game.
The opening of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy cements the new duo of Sophia and Leni, her stalwart companion who is as helpful during combat as she is solving puzzles. Unfortunately, she succumbs to the grasp of the Macula halfway through the story, and you think her gone and dead. However, towards the very end, you come across her one more time. She’s surrounded by the Macula, Asterion, and earlier chapters have revealed to you that those previously thought dead after the Macula touched them are in fact ‘still in there’, as they chase you and attempt to kill you themselves.

This revelation lead me to ask Carol Ann Bañuls, Lead Writer on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, whether there was any opportunity to save Leni, or if she really was dead and gone, and ending up buried at the bottom of the pit after Asterion ‘implodes’. Bañuls said:
“When Sophia finds Leni petrified, the player can choose to use the sphere and end her life. So whether Sophia leaves Leni in that state or chooses to put an end to her suffering is ultimately up to the player. You’re right, after Asterion’s death, everything touched by the Macula disappears with him. But Sophia has the choice not to leave Leni in that state and to do it herself before that happens.”
There’s no prompt to use the sphere, and nothing that indicates you can put her out of her misery. As someone that didn’t think to do this, and now feels like a monster for allowing her suffering to continue unnecessarily, it’s more proof that Bañuls really did think of everything. Despite my review saying that the story of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy wasn’t as emotionally harrowing as that of its predecessor, this moment may have been pretty close, as Leni was something of a favourite of mine before her untimely and grizzly demise.
