Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy has been out for a week now, with many fans having completed Sophia’s prequel adventure and finding the ending somewhat surprising, considering the ordeal she, Hugo and Amicia go through in the second game, A Plague Tale: Requiem.
In that game, Hugo and Amicia continue their fight against the Macula and attempt to Hugo from an impending death, alongside Sophia’s attempts to support, but after the events of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, fans were wondering why she hadn’t mentioned her own experience with the Macula at any point. It turns out, that’s exactly the reasoning behind the post-credit scene in the third game, and Lead Writer Carol Ann Bañuls explained everything about it during a follow-up chat after our Gamescom conversation. Full spoilers ahead:
“As for Sophia and why she never told Amicia about her experience with the Prima Macula — yes, that’s part of the reason behind the post-credit scene. In the end, Sophia simply had no good news to bring her. What happened to Hugo was inevitably going to be terrible, and Amicia wasn’t ready to hear it. The post-credit scene is really there to give some insight into why Sophia chose to remain silent about what she had discovered.”
Prequels in any franchise will always be more difficult to adhere to the lore of what comes in the future, and making sure you have all the appropriate ducks in order can be hard work, but it looks like Bañuls predicted this very talking point way ahead of time, and the above is something that fans have been commenting on all over social media. She confirmed in the original chat at Gamescom she considers Asterion, the child at the heart of the entity in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, to the first Macula, the Prima Macula, and is what started the curse all those years ago that would go on to haunt many bloodlines, including Hugo and Amicia.
How the franchise continues is up in the air, as the ending of the last game, and the modern day ending of the second game both offer unique avenues, but for now, “there are no plans” for any more spin-offs, or even A Plague Tale 3 according to Lead Level Designer Valerian Robert.
