Revenge of the Savage Planet Creative Director Believes Gaming Should Take a Note From Old Movie Models

One of the biggest challenges for indie developers like Raccoon Logic, with its title Revenge of the Savage Planet, within the gaming industry is getting their titles out into the world so that as many people as possible can see them and want to play them. For many developers, this is where Xbox Game Pass shines, as it allows these small developers to gain more awareness for their titles while also providing guaranteed revenue for the studio. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.
During a recent interview with Gamer Social Club, Alex Hutchinson discussed the reasoning behind working with Microsoft and having their title on Xbox Game Pass and how they believe that this is both a good and bad thing for the gaming industry, as well as sharing their belief on how subscription methods such as Xbox Game Pass should work.
For gamers, Xbox Game Pass is an incredible subscription method that allows them to gain access to hundreds of games for free, while also getting games on day one for free. In terms of gamers, this may seem amazing, but for developers, this doesn’t always work out well.
While talking with Gamer Social Club, Alex Hutchinson talked about how the intent of putting Revenge of the Savage Planet on Xbox Game Pass was more about getting word of mouth about the game out and encouraging players to purchase the additional content, as well as convincing their friends on other consoles to purchase the game.

Sadly, according to Alex, this doesn’t seem to have gone to plan, or at least at the time the interview took place, this hadn’t happened. They also mentioned how they felt that content has been devalued, leading gamers to expect things to be free rather than wanting to pay for things, ultimately leading to many small studios struggling or even, in some cases, closing down due to the lack of sales.
Due to this, Alex mentioned during the interview that they believe a return to the “old movie model” would be more suitable. For those who are not aware, this model mainly worked on the idea that a movie would release to theaters, move onto DVDs, and then finally streaming services.
While mentioning this, Alex does add that they feel the whole industry should agree that all games should have up to a year before they are added to a subscription-based platform, as this would allow all kinds of games the opportunity to grow on their own, as numerous small titles that are not owned by a publisher or backed by a larger company would struggle to survive in the industry much longer.
He concludes by mentioning that for many studios, even being a part of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass sadly still isn’t enough to make a difference, as years ago the money they would receive for being a part of the service would have been enough, but now for many studios it isn’t enough to continue running, leading to potential closures.
