Surprising exactly zero people, the third season of HBO’s gaming adaptation The Last of Us has been confirmed. With the second season set to debut on Sunday, April 13th, it has received stellar review scores across the board, and it’s been widely known for a while now that Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have long envisioned a third, and potentially a fourth season for the hit show, so this is little more than a confirmation of what we already knew.
The Last of Us Season Two is Coming, and Three is Confirmed
As mentioned, The Last of Us Season Two begins in four days, on April 13th, and runs for seven episodes, detailing the story of the second game, or at least parts of it. While the second game has a story that is incredibly controversial in the fanbase, it’s no surprise they’ve greenlit the third season considering the length and breadth of the story they’re adapting. In a renewal statement, Craig Mazin said of Season Two:
“We approached Season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”
How far Season 2 covers of the second game is unknown at present, but if it includes THAT moment from The Last of Us Part 2, it does bring up the question of what the third season will look like, without certain characters at their disposal, storytelling-wise.

As well as putting a dampener on The Last of Us Part 3 with his recent comments, Neil Druckmann couldn’t stop praising everyone else involved with the adaptation for his creative IP:
“To see ‘The Last of Us’ brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support. Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions.”
With The Last of Us Season Two releasing, Druckmann’s full attention will now be on the final developmental moments of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, maybe developing The Last of Us Part 3, and as of today, helping get the third season off the ground.
