The second area of Phantom Blade Zero is significantly different to the first. Whereas Weeping Creek Valley had its share of bosses, they were nothing like those found in the Crimson Forest, and that certainly speaks true for Jing Ye, The Outlaw.

If you’re here, you’re having issues with him, but by the end of this guide, we’ll walk you through every thing you need to know to enable you to beat Jing Ye, The Outlaw in Phantom Blade Zero.

How to Beat Jing Ye, The Outlaw in Phantom Blade Zero

Jing Ye, The Outlaw is the first boss you’ll fight that is on horseback! Thankfully, he doesn’t stay on horseback the entire time, but it does provide you with a different type of challenge compared to the others you’ve faced before. You’ll have already beaten Hua Qianxiao, and likely just found the key for the Crimson Forest Tunnel, but now you’re faced with an entirely different boss.

I’ll give it to the developers, because if you’re not paying attention, you won’t even make it to his arena. When you reach the Outlaw Trap Bell of Crimson Forest, you’ll see a huge chasm filled with spikes, and unless you look properly, you’ll assume you have to find a way around. Wrong. You can jump down and avoid the spikes, climbing up the other side to fight Jing Ye, The Outlaw. Before we get into the specifics though, you should know what items and weapons I had when taking him on:

The Cavalrybane is a must-have-equipped-item, as is the Shieldbreaker Talisman, although both for separate phases of the fight.

When it begins, you’re going to want to be on your guard, as Jing Ye, The Outlaw will circle around you, slashing his weapon and attempting to hurt you. If you get too much distance by running away, he’ll leap through the air on his horse, slamming into the ground and stunning you. The name of the game right now is to Parry his attacks, or block when he does his red arrow attacks, where they home in on your location, and then pick your moments to attack yourself.

As with every other enemy in the game, your blocks and Perfect Parries will lower and eventually break his Guard Meter, and when this happens, you’ll want to used Jagged Steel’s Level 5 (hopefully you’ve upgraded it this high) triangle attack, which will cause blood loss, and then attack as much as possible.

As you see his Guard Meter rise, you’ll then want to use either your Phantom Edge attack with R2 on the Dread Axe, or if you have it, your Power Surge attack with L2. Doing either of these mid-combat will result in you likely wasting them and getting your attack interrupted, or you get hurt yourself, so pick your timing properly.

Throughout the battle, as with other boss fights, you’ll need to be prepared for both blue (hit L1), or red (hit R1) attacks, as the latter especially can result in an almost instant death if it connects.

Once his health has dropped to half, he will change tact, and as such, so should you. Jing Ye, The Outlaw’s second phase sees him off his horse, with it disappearing, and now sporting a spikey shield. You’ll thank me for the accessory suggestion now. Generally speaking this transition will happen after you’ve broken his Guard Meter for a second time, and he should hopefully still be stunned when he transitions to his second phase.

If he is, use another Phantom Edge attack with your Dread Axe, double tapping R2 this time, as it’ll perform a longer three-hit combo which will destroy Jing Ye, The Outlaw’s shield in one go, and allow you to avoid any potential issues with the problems the shield can cause you.

Now you’re on the final stretch, and without his shield and horse, Jing Ye grows impatient, more aggressive, and seemingly a little worried about losing. He’ll become more frenzied, throwing more dirt at you obscuring your vision, and jumping through the air and slamming himself down onto you in the process. Whenever dirt is thrown, don’t attack, just back up slightly and be prepared to Parry. You can’t avoid his next attack in that regard, so just be ready for it.

The rest of the fight should go how the previous two thirds has at this point. You’ll want to use your Phantom Edge and Power Surge Attacks when you can, but focus on your standard combos, don’t forget to swap out your primary weapons regularly, refilling your own Sha-Chi, and make sure you heal almost too often. It’s better to heal too early than too late.

If you can do all that, and learn his multiple phases well enough, you’ll manage to dispatch him pretty easily, earning his weapon as a reward, the Outlaw Warblade!

And that’s it, you now know how to beat Jing Ye, The Outlaw in Phantom Blade Zero!
